Just like regular people, these stars were addicted to cigarettes. But through different means of therapy, they fought the urge to smoke and quit the nasty habit - for good

Recently on The Tonight Show, Jay Leno asked the president if he had quit smoking. 
"I did. I did, definitely," Obama replied. "It's out."

Obama's physician, Captain Jeffrey Kuhlman, confirmed this in a report following a medical exam at the National Naval Medical Center.

Kuhlman said Obama eats a healthy diet and only consumes alcohol in moderation. 
The president's previous examination summary listed a “nicotine replacement therapy” as among his medications.

Gisele Bundchen

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, who has a son with Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, is one of the highest-paid models in the world. 

As a New Year's resolution in 2007, Bundchen vowed to give up cigarettes. Shortly thereafter, she stacked on 15 pounds and told Britain's GQ magazine that "food tastes better than when it tasted like (an) ashtray."

Actress Katherine Heigl uses SmokeStik, an electronic cigarette to help quell her addiction. 

"I know it's ridiculous, but it's helping me not to actually smoke real cigarettes. You feel like you are smoking, and you get to exhale but it's just water vapor and not nicotine," she told Parade.com.

 

Charlize Theron

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron is known for her hard work and dedication to the characters she portrayed in films like "Monster" and "North Country." But she couldn't seem to take on the role of a non-smoker. Theron engaged the help of a hypnotist and became smoke-free for good.

 

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg, actress, comedian and cohost of "The View," said she weaned herself off cigarettes one year as a Christmas gift to herself. "I saw this commercial where these little kids were lying in bed . . . and one of the kids breathes and the smokes comes out. Something about seeing those little kids exhale that smoke made me think, 'OK, Whoop, maybe it's time to stop.'"

Matt Damon

Academy Award-winner Matt Damon underwent clinical hypnosis in 2004 to kick his 20-year smoking habit after he saw photos of himself smoking a cigarette and realized how disgusting it was.

Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," pictured here with his wife, Tracey, decided to quit smoking in December 2000, a habit he indulged since the age of 15. Stewart said he was encouraged by the CGL Foundation, which he supports. 

 

Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa, star of the morning talk show "Live! With Regis & Kelly" told Self magazine in February 2007 that she quit smoking the year before because of a fear of cancer and wrinkles. "I don't miss it," she told the magazine.

Liz Hurley

The paparazzi was stunned when they caught model and actress Elizabeth Hurley sucking on a baby's pacifier. But her spokesman soon revealed she was using the device in order to quit smoking.

Courteney Cox

In order to quit smoking, former "Friends" star Courteney Cox Arquette and her estranged husband David Arquette traveled to Brookline, Mass., to enlist the help of Yefim "The Mad Russian" Shubentsov. According to USA Today, Shubentsov's method includes bioenergetics, a healing life force that circulates within all living things.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston, also of "Friends" fame, has continued her career with smash movie hits like "He's Just Not That Into You" and "Marley & Me." But perhaps one of her most successful roles was the one she took on in real life, when she became a nonsmoker. Aniston reportedly did a lot of of yoga in an attempt to cleanse her body of caffeine and quit smoking.

Ashley Greene and fellow "Twilight" co-star Nikki Reed quit smoking when the movie became a success so they could be "better role models," according to E! Online.

Ben Affleck

Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck took advice from his best friend Matt Damon and used hypnosis to quit smoking after two decades of the nasty habit. He smoked his last cigarette on Nov. 10, 2005, shortly after he discovered wife Jennifer Garner was pregnant with their first child, daughter Violet.

Jack Black

Jack Black quit smoking several years ago, and instead of lighting up, he drinks green tea, according to azcentral.com.

The "Tropic Thunder" star has two children with his wife, Tanya. "I don't do anything exciting or dangerous really. I quit smoking, that was my last real vice. But I do like iced green tea - but that is so boring," he said.

Model Christy Turlington decided to stop smoking after she lost her father to a smoking-related disease, she blogged on easyquitsystem.com.

Turlington said she was 13 when she first lit up - and no one seemed concerned that such a young girl was smoking. She said she used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.

"After a while I was finding myself far too short of breath for my years," she wrote. "My skin had a sallow complexion, and dullness. My hair and skin smelled all the time and my teeth needed to be cleaned more frequently than usual." 

Turlington said she has no desire to return to smoking, and she's given up alcohol as well. 

 

Jon Hamm, Actor

Actor Jon Hamm, who plays smoker Don Draper on "Mad Men," told People Magazine he "despises" cigarettes. 

"I quit smoking when I was 24," Hamm told People. "It's glamorous on film, but it's not glamorous waking up and smelling like an ashtray."

Hypnotherapist Max Kirsten helped actor Ewan McGregor with his smoking addiction, The Sun reported. 

“I gave up smoking in February 2006...(and) I've never craved cigarettes," McGregor said. "If it can work for me, it can work for you."
