In Praise of Patriotism

I remember vaguely actually it's 39 years ago I went to West Point. And in West -- was kind of a mystical place I grew up very close -- here. And my parents encouraged me to watch the West Point story and television and from and then little further down under and I got the appointment and I was I was not axial seasonally that it was 1969. But my mom's had given -- and I ended she was right I was around here and you know. This is our one chance here. To remember the men and women put on the uniform like you did 39 years ago. There was a time and in our history not too long ago where people didn't pay much attention to you guys but that's changed. I mean I know exactly -- and then having again lived in the army from roughly 1970. Here now and it's it's a great thing for country that the service is valued. And that the young men and women. Who raised their hands. Take an oath to support and defend the constitution as it's not he's not studies in and they know they're -- that we will eventually put them in harm's way in all likelihood given the kind of world women."

But as I sit here it's it's it would be imprudent for me -- suggest it would be impossible under anyone's -- because some of these things play out. Or was he a terrorist forget about whether or not he was connected to al-Qaeda or if -- self radicalized and -- What's new terrorists well I don't I don't know the answer that question and I think the investigation. Should. -- pass -- judgment on that as it starts to establish the linkages that we. That we have found but look today is veterans day it does cast a shadow that ends well it's a memorial service. But before Louis yesterday for seven soldiers killed in -- striker in Afghanistan. And yet there's 25 million veterans in this country and what we're here for today is is to celebrate their service.
