Which was -- odd the news we haven't had a lot to celebrate really from Motorola recently it's been it sort of an odd odd summer for them. First impressions --"

" Well imagine you get up at like 2 in the morning your house is completely dark you need a glass of water you stumble out of the bedroom you can't see a thing. And then that from the middle of somewhere in your house you hear this."

" Okay that in my life and really jumped out of respect for a couple of does that go off now that's the sound effect for rise after text messages we consider that for whatever. Because of the startup sound like there's little little. -- that goes back and forth stirred up and this is also. Nelson yet to get everytime you get in them this thing says. But at the you can change it via so impressions I mean."

" You know. This was they release what course we saw all the commercials. For Detroit this is a big relief for Motorola. You know having hands on with it for about ten minutes -- with a the other day. I thought the keyboard was you know there wasn't as. Everyone loves a keyboard everyone wants if if you want a slide out keyboard if you wanna QWERTY keyboard then I guess she'll be happy with this side I found keys to be a little small."

" I found it to be fast. But it's not as fast as some of these other phones so that like the Samsung moment I don't know it's much faster than the Samsung is thousands have some. Yeah I benchmark did -- six different ways and it came out up to twice as fast as the as his running multiple applications what when your benchmarking or how what is the benchmark tests and actually running benchmark apps that test CPU speed memory access file system access graphics. And the deal is even though the Samsung moments processor has a higher clock speed this is an entirely different architecture because that was the difference then because I was -- clock speed numbers. Compared to -- so what what oh why is -- different the architecture that makes it faster this is the cortex a eight it's the kind of processor. It's the kind of processor used in the iPhone three GS and the Palm Pre. And -- you know it's kinda like it's kind of like gone from a four cylinder to an eight cylinder engine in your car. It's it's just it's just a processor that is inherently faster per clock cycle in many ways because that same number of megahertz you get two to three times the performance."

" I'm actually fairly excited I mean Motorola has been. Down a -- sling. The last great it was a razor. So something like this that comes out. Right around the same time as new phones from -- And potentially something from apple down the line is actually -- nursing spectrum holidays so you have a you have a great cell phone. With a keyboard and really fast operating system with most the social networking features that all the other android phones who've recently have like the hero. The palm which isn't an android phone that has all the social networking could use. And it's what it's Sasha said it's a lot faster than any other -- and."

" It is and that 854 by 480 screen it is just amazing for web browsing. That's one of the most intriguing parts of this device and I think we're seeing that now certainly the Smartphones it's in the screens are only gonna get bigger this is bigger than an iPhone screen -- like what a quarter of an inch. But it has almost twice as many pixels -- the screen is."

" Far far higher resolution than the iphone's CC even though the web browsers have same course they're both based on technology called web kit. -- a situation where you open up a webpage on my phone you have to scroll left -- right you know right up web page on here to see the whole thing. I think one of the instant things and they really they really showcase this on the phone. You see the picture I guess on the screen right all that grave there is actually very very highly textured concrete it really looks. Yeah that's the opening screen really understand if you if you actually open up and try to go back and forth on the main screen. You -- to get textured concrete on the background. And it's extremely detailed it's amazingly -- it is it'll scratches in this picture that's obviously just the background but to have back kind of -- kind of resolution screen even fonts look better on a high risk reminds us."

" Looking at compared to be you know the Motorola click. Some another you know another phone that's become enough it's not yet right for us to -- some Hanson yeah roughly until. Why don't get this phone over that. With a click is really -- niche product the clip is for people who -- obsessed with either FaceBook MySpace or Twitter. And if you are person who leaves and dice in the moment by FaceBook MySpace or Twitter there is literally nothing like the click it is like eight. Heroin injection directly into your being upset but okay -- blur feature exactly. If you were not obsessed with one of those services you'll find the click profoundly and knowing. Yeah so that click kind of fulfills that intense social networking at this is morbid general purpose device that comes at this. Kind of blank stock android interface that you can configure however you want. But it is in today dismissed customized with the click towards that one feature."

" One thing I noticed is that Verizon. Usually puts a bunch of like -- vcast stuff on there. Sort of these two different applications for TV. But this had none of that this was just really clean screen. When you started up there's only one or two applications installed already FaceBook is on there but it's not really front senator."

" I have to try to get in here on the line I don't know. Verizon did say their there rhapsody music client is coming -- never really looking forward to that because it deals with -- that big minuses with this phone. Which is there is no way to sync music and video that he's safe for what it's like. There is it's not that it's not that the alternative to iTunes is inadequate it's that there is not doesn't exist it doesn't exist there's some its third great programs you can get that are open source seeking a double twist. But that's all really geeky. And it's kind I think for the average user."

" I mean it if you plan to send directly into the computer right now right have a show up it's like a Disco and here on your computer you can actually drag. Video or music but they don't show -- I drag on lots of lots of video. There's no video player there is you know hidden but at -- they guessed yet begun to."

" Gallery okay perfect when they get from just cost you over it and gadgets that like -- like this he said. You know it's hard to look at the -- without looking at the company which brought the device to a Motorola he says you for years this team has been synonymous with disappointment. Who is that accurate description of Motorola. Motorola is a -- Motorola's manic depressive company and that's been true or -- 3040 years. They have these they have these crazy up and down cycles."

" I like it I haven't had a you're talking I mean literally one half hour. After starting to play with that because it arrived about the -- for the show out of the build quality is really very good I think -- was big big super Verizon and Motorola did something a little bit -- here. We're when -- ticket out of the box they want you to make sure -- the acute that there is a mechanical keyboard because it's packed inside the box with a keyboard halfway deployed at a that's one of the okay if I always thought of but very very good quality builds you can tell that has a much snap your processor than previous android phones because. These touch our current system is so much more responsible than it was before it's still not quite as intuitive and this is this not quite quite as reactive as the iPhone operating system is. That's already pretty big leap forward. Has the haptic response every time you're talking these many -- the -- get some positive feedback. I was looking that I know that I prefer to -- G1 and of course the first application launch was Google Maps the updated on the turn by turn directions. And so what's it navigated me from the kitchen to the opposite unknowingly and the spoken directions."

" The fifth and that's of course one of the big features that we're hearing about is -- is the turn by turn. Feature from Google which is in this device which we also hear you're hearing and its gonna become the iPhone soon. What's your experience that you play with the turn by turn Sasha."

" No I actually don't try it and so I'm sending it to argue PS reviewers to do the can make himself. I jump what do you I."

" Try to recently I think. One of the most interesting things. We get this on screen well here by got a screen shot here -- look at if I actually. One of the great things about it actually tap the location where you are you actually see a live view. Of the street in front of the action doesn't mean streak alive wall slow yeah yeah it's if you have -- pretty incredible -- life death. Controlling satellite."

" Yeah I did I -- notice I called up some routes even though I could not follow them as I was not in a car and it had very loud prompts the prompts were clear things came up pretty quickly. The real question is -- like -- reviews the question is when you're going fifty miles an hour how responsive as it. Is it going to call the prompt before you get to the intersection at fifty miles an hour if you -- in the wrong direction it's going to recalculate quickly -- that's the real."

" Andy you you've been working on this you just actually published a column yesterday on turn by turn. GPS so I wanna get your sense of how. This unfold the what does this do to TomTom I mean I'm curious people are pretty we've been hearing well he's iPhone killers as this is it to Tom -- killer."

" I wouldn't say so I think that I think it's going to shake -- all of the middle ground GPS navigators I've looked at every single GPS navigator for the iPhone. And there's so many of them that are just mediocre -- deliver every feature that most people just. Played one that's the sweet spot of navigation that 80% of I'm here probably get there but applications like Tom Harman -- excellent that I was my favorite from the iPhone. That's -- to something really important it's all about interactive guidance is all about how much information you give me with one really quick glance. I do after really stare at the screen and ongoing at 65 miles an hour Don Imus be fired before figure out when -- gonna need to turn. And so from what I've seen both through videos and from using this I -- for the past half hour. I would certainly prefer to have either a real muscular apple like TomTom. Whether it's for -- reverse for the iPhone or whatever. Then rely on this exclusively. Or my navigation but it really does mean that it now it's so much more expensive to try to compete with school because that's usually can be with pretty yeah."

" These there's also also remembered that the vast majority of Americans the vast majority of people in the world don't have android phones are iphones. And even apple only intends to be what 10% of the phone market so that other 90% which don't have iphones or that other 80% which kind of icons and android phones. They're still gonna want navigation device yet and that's for the weird thing won't be available to them."

" Yeah Edward thing is the -- application costs you 99 dollars you can buy a physical best fort TomTom for 69 dollars minimum. And has a much better GPS receiver harbor to the and anyone your me."

" Tricks for this was that. GPS shouldn't be should be just as complicated as the rear view mirror things -- said in -- which is great even -- get a quick glance from it. Anyone knows responsive and you don't want it you almost want to dissolve. Into your rear view mirror you almost wanted to dissolving your -- where you don't want to be intrusive did you find that was the case with us."

" Oh win beyond what Detroit phone yeah. Not really I think it's as good as as many GPS navigator is out there it gives you moving map display. There's a line -- text at the top to bottom of the screen don't tell you your next turn is coming up in one point three miles will be turning right. But it doesn't give you look back really cool hybrid displays the that the application alone was from by motion next and has this. Great display were -- just one big orange -- say right. Dummy here is the name of the place you wanna turn to is coming up in exactly 500. Beat. And that's the sort of thing we you can get that information and one quarter of a second if that long. And is like a third Ramirez goes I was driving with a four I -- with an opera to monster that is my favorite out and it's just part of that little -- when you go. Turn signal. OK good at the."

" If you had to pick and I know some of these other ones are programmable -- you can actually pick and then customize as -- can because you know males switzer famous actor. John would you pick. To do the voice yeah. I think the Simpsons -- was pretty cool Simpson's Africa and -- like telling which -- ago. Yeah Jeff I would I would if if I had a choice and it was available I pick it -- it back and sell them -- that's available at. On -- device organizers some if he had a it was your favorite."

" Probably would have to be the way that Jackie Stewart used to call the F one race is on TV."

" Could I get a lot of accidents but and a lot more on the commute -- especially when -- going fifty miles an hour ago that -- yeah that's I'm gonna take a life waited on Sasha. People you know obviously praising android for its openness praising android for its ability to be on all kinds of devices praising android that it's free. But the very thing we get excited about is android may also be the thing I think that might be holding this back which is the ecosystem the -- ecosystem and we you know. Being able to customize. I mean I think Scoble post summing up to -- about. Team to beat the iPhone you have to have an equal amount of applications. To what the app store now has because that's not actually -- but but it does what he said which is infinitely. Customizable. Disagree."

" Totally disagree. The sheer number. Remember how much of the iphone's app store consists of for instance identical speed dial apps that are differentiated only by having dad and mom logos because you can't have an -- with multiple icons right at hundreds of book apps right exactly. So what you need to have it is all the apps people are looking for an inference on its way."

" And truly is I think -- a solid second place at this point did you have about 10000 apps what's interesting though is. But wait too many of the gaps in the android market."

" Are programmed by these sort of little individual fourteen year old kids and their basements. And not enough by the big software companies with a flashy products it's almost impossible to find the 3-D game. And I'm really hoping that category get stepped up."

" Well I just wrote about that and maybe you can correct me. The limits on the android android 2.0 four after installation is turned to -- megabytes onboard you can install on the card for example you can X this poem -- storage. To say for example you wanted to write missed which was video games for sure. The PC and Mac four years ago and it's written runs on iPhone fairly well but missed his summer point seven megabits it's almost two gigabyte. She can actually put it on an iPhone and you can't get all those Randy check it all those. " It what do we think about that. Well I think that Google's gonna make two different groups of people happy very good enough people in the media what -- gonna have to make happy users. And they're gonna have to make the developers happy they're. The reason why the iPhone does so well is because it makes the users happy by not affect -- your number applications is the fact that so many of them are such very very higher quality there's so many PRI's under the hood. That make it so easy for a program to make programs that look. Awesome and respond obsolete. That the download your first three apps and you're pretty much took on iPhone. But the second thing is that so they've Michigan Minnesota opera stuff the gold rush is on if you wanted to learn how to develop a brand new system. You can learn how to look for her Google you're gonna learn how program for a pretty well OS. Or you can learn how to program per iPhone and here's a list of 100 people who are making eight to 10000 dollars. One week per week or even per day on a hot application that made it into the top ten. That's was gonna attract the top developers not only that but the sort of developers where it's intimidate people who expect to but they invest some money into developing this thing got a big return -- that's going to be their biggest problem."

" Yeah and you -- about that some of the art and some of the android developers I've spoken to one of their big frustrations is the disparate marketplace and having development partner you applications to different to different phones and one of the things I was talking to an android developer said. We're still waiting for that -- device we want. Again to your point John and be able to develop and bring a you know with all that processing speed on certain device and I'll be able to match and another device that's a big problem."

You know you're not getting that -- you're having to come out of pocket at that moment and that. That perception of an extra hundred dollars is a big deal my wrong I can solve your problem that best -- That's what I have for. Yes that's by selling it for wanted to not yeah they're Williams out there. That's a from salt."

" And I and I know I've always been trying to figure out exactly what the I don't care what level is were phones. I think for a lot of people don't expect to get a phone for free or close some nominal fee of less than 99 bucks. I think I'm almost convinced that there's not NN box and less and then there's almost a hundred bucks to 400 bucks and people really appreciate a big difference between them yeah."

" That's one -- about android generally I think. Is when looking at one and not right now but eventually android it's gonna take over all -- you're gonna see feature phones. He's it'll flip phone that you would like give your mom I guess. Are -- be running -- and it's just you're just gonna happen there's really no reason to write your own operating system for phones anymore when you haven't."

I agree that -- rest Linux is right now that's an operating system that powers so many mobile devices from book readers all the way to phones. But -- you find you have Andrew device like this Edinburgh request like this and they don't run the same software -- run the same operating system -- these poor people saw her from purity here but not necessarily the same machine that can run the same maps. -- Re compile a -- the source. " Well this. But Sony's Hulu isn't going to give you content that is high enough quality to do the screen justice right. Maybe it's only -- will. But looking at some high definition like downloaded content to our you know that you get from the iTunes store. People -- wondering if this is going to I don't play with a long enough to know whether or not it you know air economically that's going to bother me -- not."

Microsoft to miles because it's not complicated just simply works if you screener and you can hold it however you want. I'm -- since the my was always had a really bad job. Trying to over design. Their input devices -- great but they're not terribly easy to use my best I think. I think these great -- on the magic mouse as part of it uses so far is that gives you sort of like track ball like input. Weakness casually just sort of be looking at left and right up and down. I still don't think it's a really great mouse were clicking and dragging things across the screen I just thunderstorm used to the way that I -- miles is at this point in my life. That's hard for me to figure don't know yet to handle it this way. --"
