With general crystal now almost eighty days from now what happened with the journal crystal was on sixty minutes and was asked how often do you talk I want a president I want and instead just once in that seventh -- seven days here that we can go right okay yeah just --"

" And I think there was this sense that it was indefensible. Because you hurt people who were even sort of military experts well that's not right now."

" From my perspective in Washington I didn't see the problem I'll tell you the truth because -- Yeah because look he's getting reports every week from a crystal he's reading the reports in addition new which in terms of -- line of command. It was coming through the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- and the Defense Secretary Bob gates and of course the president meets with them regularly. In fact Mullen went over to Afghanistan to speak with the crystal about the report all that but there was a great deal. Of hubbub about the possibility the White House didn't wanna get that report Edwards was forcing the crystal to hold back slapping and we're hearing in the media and it was coming from several different places but I. I think it was ideological I think the whole idea here as well as the hub -- about not meeting directly with -- Bristol was an effort to force the president's hand to get him to give -- crystal. The additional troops estimated to be about forty cents."

" Well you know what you want. I don't think that they had to try very hard to to do that if they were going to hold public opinion at all because. The minute that the crystal -- and by the way sixty minutes numbers have been up dramatically in the last. Few months yes. And that that interview with the -- knocked -- out of park okay for them and and I think it was a good -- I mean it was yeah. The general was very -- boy and I. His -- daily routine and everything just kind of get to know -- and seeing where he is and how he spends time with the troops. It's sort of left to say and you mean the president is -- listen this guy in the sky gets on a helicopter. And goes down to some of the most dangerous areas in Afghanistan to get -- time with his troops face time with his troops. And our commander in chief can spend more time with him and there's a shot of the crystal now and in fact -- correspondent for sixty minutes -- even asked the general he said. This can't be safe for you -- I have to do this. So how can you look at one commander in chief. -- hits he's committing to troops in Afghanistan it's war front. Who's willing to go into harm's way on a daily basis to check in and in seventy days you're. Chief commander in chief has none that I mean I think that there is tremendous amount of pressure on the president to say something."

" Well absolutely I don't think there's any question but the but the thing that it is why do you think that he wasn't listening to -- while I think you because it's just it's not the case that you you'd say the -- what he's not reading the reports he's not listening to the military into. He's -- tremendous pressure let me tell you. To respond to the military or to be said to be at the military because American Democrats. Are always thought to be weak on national security. Have been thought through."
