Sotomayor's Start

" this is the first Monday in October the start of another Supreme Court term. This year's panel has a new member at a lot of new cases that will range from having a very narrow focus to impacting the lives of millions of Americans. Correspondent Shannon -- begins our coverage with a look at the newest associate justice and the docket for her first year."

" I certainly think by anyone's analysis this term is certainly shaping up as a potential blockbuster. And today's really opening day."

" A fresh termed a new justice and -- docket is full of controversy including issues as diverse as whether grisly dog fighting videos are protected as free speech under the First Amendment. And if former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling should get to appeal his sixteen convictions related to the 2001 collapse of that company."

" Well I certainly that justice is I think have a sense of how profoundly important. They're decisions in the a wide variety of areas can be I think. American public needs to tune in more vote to the Supreme Court because it is. Issuing rulings that will have a profound effect on our democracy and -- On our our everyday lives."

" Newly minted justice Sonia Sotomayor will score -- face the issue that raised concern from both sides of the aisle during her confirmation hearings gun control. While the court has ruled that the Second Amendment provides an individual right to gun ownership. Later this terminal tackle the next question. Whether or not the Second Amendment actually applies to the states and what power they do or don't have to be and citizens from owning guns. By all accounts the court's newest member is increasing her public role. Throwing out the first pitch -- yankees game joining her colleagues at the annual red mass Catholic ceremony for members of the legal profession and dancing I'm away."

" But what only time will ultimately reveal is what impact she may be having women nine justices sit down to hash out the disputes. That impact the very framework of how American society is governed."

" They closed doors they sit in the debate they really focus bring their intelligence and their perspectives to bear on these very complex hotly contested legal issues. I think this adds to the allure the mystique in the excitement that is the Supreme Court."

" Shivering now joins me -- and others another story that's interesting justice John Paul Stevens only hired one long current clerk for this term."

" And that is -- my address is everybody wants to read into that because normally by this time Justice Stevens retired four clicks that's the full complement. A retired justice only needs one clerk they can have that while they remain at the court. He's not addressing those rumors he's not talking about retirement he looks great today and -- like he always is."

" They are and it's interesting because in the 220 year history of the court. Only twelve justices have been Catholic and all of that time and now half of those are sitting on the -- So they did attend a red -- today -- Sydney yesterday and certainly racial solidarity. Among all of them Shannon."
