Communist rule Beijing holding a massive parade in Tiananmen square and highlighting its growing military and economic strength. An old symbol is also making a comeback. Communist chairman now -- done now represents not only a link to the founding of communism in this vast country of one point three billion. But also -- glimpse of the future of 21 century China -- Dana Lewis is back from a three week trip travel all over the country China. In his first stop with the capital city. Beijing and -- is back here in New York talk about his trip and what he discovered and Dana good morning to you what did you observe with. I guess chairman -- getting a boost today China."

" It's pretty incredible I mean this guy who you know a lot of historians would tell you was brutal who was responsible for the murders. Or for the deaths of millions of Chinese at one point during the cultural revolution for instance. Why suddenly is he being promoted by the Communist Party you know we can show you some of the video we have of a new movie that's just been put out. By the big Communist a government of China. Which is an epic movie some 200 top stars including Jackie -- starring in it. Which is really to remind the Chinese -- where they come came from. That there altogether that Mao was the glue that keeps the country together I guess bill and that's -- that's the symbol and why he's important now to talk about the fact that. 170%. Right and 30% wrong with the Chinese don't hear much about that 30% but. If it seems that the Communist Party in the Chinese Government is really struggling and a modern day China. To try and hold the country together and they're using old images to. Do that you know what's interesting about that -- you can argue they know the Communist China is the way to Beijing keeps a lid on the entire country you point out. So -- is ethnic tension that may spring up in the western part of the country. Is kept in check. And at the same time -- there have been yet and you're right about that the same time you've got so much capitalistic tendencies on the part of the country. That really fuels and economy destroying what 7% right now I think there's an obvious contradiction here they're obviously there it actually saying 8% this year now building just. They just updated that figure so. China. Has suffered during the recess the recession but the -- to do pretty well compared to it to the American economy in the European economy but. But yeah I mean how you deal -- this contradiction of a Communist country. That has tremendous market reform it is capitalist driven right now. It is a market driven economy. It is now the third largest country in the in the world economically they suppress Germany this year they are caught on the heels of America in the coming decade or two. People want more freedom. They they they watch television they they increasingly see the Internet. They've -- with economic power they want political freedoms of some sort but the Communist Party has to try to keep it together and and it. That they're not about to introduce any more freedoms billion though there have been thousands of demonstrations this year. Thousands by human rights activists by environmentalists. And by people who have been sent back to the countryside. Because there have been cutbacks in labor there there's a lot of discontent and I think the Communist Party is. It's in somehow sort of floundering around at times trying to figure out how they're gonna keep peace. And and the way they do would have by reintroducing -- in many ways saying we'll look at you will look at your pensions will look at your salaries long term. Even though that's not true at the moment that they're saying. Stay with stay with -- they revealed images of China that's who we are a lot of contradictions that."
