" Her vitality and sense for lives on it on the family farm in Essex Ohio. Back in the Buckeye State keeping busy was just -- fact the lives of --"

" And a nine siblings we all had to chair and now helping mom keep the house clean and so forth."

" That's it was fun you've heard daily chores didn't stop her from excelling at school I loved school."

" My aunt and mother couldn't keep me home from scope -- and my father used to come over in death. Played baseball. Yeah we -- had a wonderful time."

" In 1939 at the age -- nineteen Beverly married young soldiers. With the star award to her husband sent overseas."

" Families can do attitude led her to the navy."

" I took a test and New York first and they found out that I mechanically."

" Beverly spend the war as an airplane mechanic. Then in 1946. At just 26 years old she received devastating new. -- and yeah I had cancer. Beverly underwent surgery to remove the cancer at the same time her marriage fell apart. She's soon remarried for twelve years later her husband left and trials and tribulations that might crush an old person's spirits. And not beds and in 1963. She met the love of our lives Ray Smith. Beverly and -- settle in West Babylon New York which she went to work at north -- VA medical center Kathy Lee worked closely with Beverly."

" She's always very compassionate very dedicated to her job."

" After 47 years bad retired. You can still find her at the VA -- leave these days she's in training."

" We've had as many as 32 veterans to participate and she's often been the only female competitor from our team what."

" Makes Beverly story truly amazing is that she only learned to swim when she was seventy. And never know how to swim myself through in the that a two of the veterans."

" Kind of encouraged parents that it says -- just him and I said I'm afraid I."

" I download data twice before we had -- start breathing. Putting a face in the water soon enough there are few words follow -- going across the deep -- and six months later and went and I -- Went and she's continue to win every year but cold that isn't all -- after."

" I'm willing to try and most. At this thing let me do. I'm on track at."

" I hate and time the 25 foot wall. When I was eighty years old."

" Studies show that staying active later in life. Is one of the best ways to ward off dementia another age related diseases it's simple signs folks using. Or lose it."

" She's constantly doing something she's -- do or -- others. And I think that's headed to the longevity of alive. That's turns ninety in October. Don't expected to slow down. Watch out come to compete and be prepared to veto -- So when does she plan to call it quits. And I got and."

" But but but but but but a."

" While hall now joined now by Beverly Smith and her coach Patrick Campbell thank you both for coming through the show. Bad that we capture the spirit. All they had the spirit of the games. Every every day up every -- that spirit what this whole story I I love it how I think we did."

" I think you didn't do Oklahoma --"

" And yeah what desperation you -- you know you are an inspiration to so many people I think that when you do and it's amazing in. My god I wish I had your renegade. It that way you it yeah."

" Dubious tactics. Got up and start planning yet but after I considered it at the right now Patrick. What."

" Sets that are we apart or loses the is she unique. Or -- a lot of rounds veterans -- and seniors that are really looking at isn't. And say okay it doesn't matter hole I am more I'm gonna go start exercising now and focusing on my health and thinks of the sort."

" I heard it she is a unique individual but -- typical veteran -- veterans around there and she holds -- wonderful qualities that do all. Share. Amongst each other and she's. She's unique individual but I think they were the qualities she has brought people out there and some people that don't have. The energy to get out there and do things like Beverly it's -- there's the fear."

" Now let's talk about the routine because you've got your personal try -- that kind of -- you setting the agenda every day. What kind of preparation do you do you the she'll undergo mean what what things did you do in the course of her training. I mean I know that you -- how to swim camera but what things do you do on a daily basis."

" Well I've worked through Edwards for nineteen years we started nineteen years ago come with the golden -- cancer telecoms just so we we do the we we did clinics a lot of times well all of the veterans that would go would come in practice whether or shuffle board or vegetable oil hitting a soft or fatigue. All of the all of different eventually did get the opportunity to practice these things before we don't compete. And."

" A little a little that you you build up as the sort of the muscles -- NA AA tournament and game's first and then you gradually exercise routine."

" So yes and she and who is very independent she didn't need any motivation like percent of personal for what."

" What -- my next question Tibet have. What's the motivation. What."

" And modern should being able to get out there and what did it. They have absolutely."

" Please yeah well -- and that's all I wish more Americans -- more people around the world wake up in the morning answer we got a doorway and really got."

" We -- and we got to do with Bob Taft up now."

" One of the things that I notice in the package is that you like to compete. Right you you like had enough to compete you looked at so what kind of you know when you when you go for that -- what you get out of it."

" What do I get -- yeah. Well I want is to get have a -- that at what I am what I do I want him to help. You get themselves up there per IMAX."

" So -- Winfrey who is what you see as a motivation for others do the same thing."

" Then they have to get out there and try pop -- You wanna set an example I want to set an example is a right."

" That's amazing. Now let's talk about. We we got the best example in the world right here. Let's talk about advice. You from -- professional trainer panel. Let's talk about advice especially for our senior viewers that kind of -- well you know -- never exercised before. And we certainly know that it's never too late this is she's a perfect example -- but so far as what advice would you give the seniors. On how to get things move it."

" Large or recreation therapist and let's say first that you should always seek medical advice before getting involved the American engaging in any activity right. And then what when you do it get kind of work out plan. And then from there. To a variety of activities. Don't just stick with one thing and expect a lot of results go slow. And and tried to work a variety of activities two different -- to you know from from me and welcome -- works to going and shooting baskets and swimming. In a swimming is very good and very for a friendly to the body basically -- beginning to wonder it's not so. We don't have the adverse. Responses that you get from any -- are excited silently and so the water is very good to get involved things such as you get all the but even young you know the younger at this point to. If you wanna live long like Beverly is you need to get to exercise when you're young as well and and even young people should seek medical advice before making up -- acts as if they haven't been active but ready."

" But have any advice."

" And advice to you appears that there I want them to get app and try if they can act when a goal. As well as a silver are any. With that but actively going out to those metals are you didn't know I I -- all of -- now."

" I did you know this is it this is at it because I do feel that you know I hate. Each has so far as giving anybody a number four age. And to me ages hi how how young you feel. How young do you feel that well Ravi around seven to -- war. That's -- you've got lol lol you got all over it. Oh my god you know I I thank you both -- coming to the program. I I think I'm supposed to read the -- but I'm not. I think you're an inspiration. I don't think I'll tell you an example I think that you are you read percent when we say you know what is never too late. Live should be cherish. And it should be utilized and and and I thank you for being that example. To me and and to everybody who's gonna watch this program can thank you so much for. Well I hope they take. Something from this. It's right up that I may. Very good well thank you both for coming again that's we have for -- it's time for your -- us."

" Welcome back -- doctor Manny we ask for your emails on living longer and our first one touches on a great topic. Tony from Monroe Wisconsin writes about the many benefits of Omega three fatty acids found in fish. The problem with Tony is that he's allergic severely allergic to fish. So he wants to know this analogy can also mean that he cannot take or Omega three supplements very good question. You know what I would say probably not. It's it's not a good idea if you have fish allergy. To take Omega three. Cause you might have an indirect analogy to the Omega three also. Now you can be tested. Four Omega three analogy if especially if you really want taken but there's a lot of other antioxidants out there. They can do just the job of Omega threes and you can also find. Natural Omega oils sometimes and in non fish products like vegetables and things like that so. Check what your position if you wanna be tested for analogy. If not stay away from Omega three supplements because they can be a little problematic if you have fish -- is especially semiofficial allergies. And check out other antioxidants. Trying to little white -- It's not too bad. Our next email is from Donald and he tells us he has been a smoker. For fourteen years. And he has tried to quit the patch using the patch gum just about everything. But he hasn't succeeded and he's given up trying he knows he could kill him but he wonders if there's anything he can do. To better his chances I guess of not dying from cigarette smoking look the first thing I wanna tell you -- you gotta quit. You've got a quick you've got a quick OK you've got to try to do the best you can't. You have seen examples and to show people you know sort of change in the lives in in in in ages that you would never imagine but you've got to try to quit. However. If you decide never to quit smoking that you gotta go and sort of and that and a prospective. Course here of monitoring your cardiovascular health you've got to go to see a doctor every year make sure you get your EKG check your cholesterol. The on the -- intensely doctors can do. Also try vitamin C you know I like vitamin C as a good supplement to improve especially the inner lining of your chest. So that's another -- type of good vitamin that you should take and of course. Talk to your doctor about getting routine either chest X rays or MRIs or cat scans of your chest and a regular basis especially. If you decide that you know what I'm not gonna quit smoking but the big answer to your question is you've got to quit. And our last email comes from 55 year old Bruce -- he wants to know -- the top ten paying stopped and to live longer. And he wants to know if it's not to like okay so let's go about it a couple of things that you should consider number one in the head parade. Is exercise if you want to live longer you've got exercise that's one thing that it's very very good for you try to exercise it takes thirty minutes. Twice or three times a week that's good enough. The other thing asleep in a lot of people don't -- tend to forget that sleeping really -- bills you're immune system it reduces stress. And if if you have a good eight hours of sleep. It's wonderful and that's so far as making you cardiovascular health and distressed levels come down so it is very very good. All so you've got to think about oral hygiene. You've got a rush you've got floss your teeth regularly you've got to go to your dentist because again. Gum disease has been linked to many illnesses especially things like heart disease now another thing you can do which is something that I did a couple of years ago get a pet. Dog and cat whatever you want because pets are very good for you they will reduce stress especially -- a -- take care of them. And then when you reduce stress and -- should also to lower cholesterol in the crucial blood pressure she got a little long life -- your pet. Also keep in mind. You know to have your -- active you know keeping your mind active is very important by doing puzzles. And reading and things like that that's very important and of course we always say don't smoke. So we have a lot of things that smoking is really one of the leading causes all the illnesses and death in this country. As always thanks to all who wrote and we don't get to every email on the show but we should know that we do value all of please go to -- knows -- dot com for more answers to your emails. And other vital."

" lose my medicine and help. Next -- and out of court joins us dissect the latest head."

" Welcome back who asked not to many joining me once again is doctors Dinara cooler. And you gonna help us -- from the latest headlines -- got to see how are you why it I got good stuff for you today. I got good stuff you can now because talking about how to. Beyond. And I -- on the heart and there yet what little tour in the joints now. Now -- one headline that I saw this week which is typical economy headlined that you know I say yeah. Is this new study looking at finding this new fountain of youth panel one pill is gonna make me. -- banking H Vegas has done this or it's slow my aging process. And you know how much you love those float around to exercise every day what do you think anti aging -- yes -- no."

" Well I think aging affects a lot more complex than just come up with a pill quite frankly especially in humans but with the basis of this is that. They've studied mice and other animal models that are on and nutritionally based caloric restricted diets and they are able to find the mechanism a wide those animals live longer than animals in a regular diet and had more calories diet. And it came down to finding out. That there's a gene called -- two. That when it's activated seems to -- seems to slow down aging process. That -- them get as unhealthy they don't develop late stage diseases like. Atherosclerosis or cardiovascular disease or diabetes. And so since they found that chain that they were able to see if they found to find a pill that could activate that -- and just so happened they did and it's called press fair trial later we finally Sarah try it."

" Wine yes. Red line and and what however when I haven't been telling you a little red wine on her regular bases with a little moderation never drink and drive. It keeps you keeps you young."

" So respect -- actually angry track that we that we've come to to know and love it and this found in red -- That is not only. But I think the main reason that we we know is fair trials that we know that it can slowdown cardiovascular disease that increases your metabolism even increases your sex drive. And now it may be responsible for slowing down aging process but. That's exactly and set that you could take its rice you can write one I tip well then as we grow its hair."

" believe in the that would have been a perfect example for that with the old one that I great can look at my airport but."

" Com so that it's still early to say that this is really -- the situation scientists are definitely working on it and we don't know that's gonna work in humans. Humans did carry this gene that I can that I think aging process is -- more complex than just taking a -- isolate."

" We take it into you know as I still don't believe that you're gonna find one pill with enough for this dreadful to make a difference however however. What you're saying is a little caloric restriction in other words bring it down a notch right don't need that so many calories a day. But but but nutritionally base that means nutritional value that you have a little Mediterranean diet a La -- Exactly. Which includes element I -- I Lou -- a little late this you know. I knew that and I can look just like it again this isn't -- all right I love that story good so and the eight impelled may be on the way. Let's talk about another story which is a big. A big one I think it's very important which has to do with sleep apnea. Which you know is interrupt the sleep. You know. That kind of sound you know a lot of community you know who you are there. Sleep apnea bad for us. You know big problem what do you think about this -- that."

" Well they just cut the largest study from Australia that has said that but. It causes an increased mortality and 46%. And men it doubled their risk of death as well -- So if it's a major major problem has two types of sleep apnea as obstructive sleep apnea which is the most common and that's when -- the soft tissue in the back of the throat closes the airway passage and then their central sleep apnea. With a brain forgets to tell the muscles to keep breathing. This and then there's the combination of the two the two instructive as the most that you should cut can come from obesity. Heavy drinking. Some people just because of their anatomy of their up there -- And their mouth and -- and -- Airways made it it may obstruct enclosed. But at the process of of it doing that is that it. And that releases stress hormones. He needs to building plaques that lead to cardiovascular disease increased stroke high blood pressure. And obesity and can even lead to two depression because of the lack of sleep. So it is a serious serious problem."

" Now for folks that really don't know if they have sleep apnea and what are the symptoms that that is -- on. I mean I see the consequences for heart disease stroke and all that high blood pressure. But what of the sort of every day symptoms that you feel."

" Well one is actually apart and so if you haven't somebody that you sleep went and they can bail out and here you. But it's not just snoring this is where people are actually they're snoring snoring snoring and then they start cut choking. Well they were or they stop for a moment and then they sort of make it's choking Senator Clinton started -- Exactly and so -- have been wanting for people that don't have sleeping partners are or have partners that don't wanna say anything to them. It can be if they're frequently waking up at night. If there waking up with a severe headache every single morning that's another sign as well. And if there's noticed at the start having some irritability or some mood changes because of the lack of sleep supposed some of the sentence so you know don't keep it quiet. If you hear something say something. Nike slogan and and you should say writing because it is a treatable disease that. It is it tripled its and it may be as simple as people learning to sleep on their size instead of sleeping on there backs. And it or it could mean having to have a breathing device something help used to bring that."

" But it is a fixable problems at the end of the day something that can really prevent a lot of people from getting sick. Okay. Next story is. And and this is something that you know IEI you know what I I know. It has to do would binge drinking."

" Now part of the study worry that. And the bench drinking and now the government again surveys says 11000 Americans. Who wear over the age of fifty and of course I don't fall into categories over the age of fifty. They seem to also do a little binge drinking what the heck is going on with this fifty crowd."

" Here right well what they clogged by thick column -- is binge drinking is having more than five drinks tonight. Once that at least on some power want one day a month supply it went fine thanks so five drinks. In a month. You know five drinks at one night more than fighting climate makes -- one -- well managed not to comment right now she put up what -- expect that. -- Believe it figured out Atlanta had at least then why not right well -- illegal -- what legal -- limited but anyway. The point is it that this is what -- qualified is binge drinking. And what people then then it's and of course this happens and people that are -- that -- so this is not something that we think of this as just a college kid to college kid problem anymore I."

" And the definition is a little too strict. It potentially. I mean you have a dinner party your house and you know I beg you let's see you cooking a little French cooking you put a little wine in the souffle that you take a little sip before you know -- you had a couple of the beautiful. Glasses of and then you've got to you know the port that the end anyway."

" But remember we live in New York so maybe -- somebody and the and the so actually so -- so what is it health. Thing with the binge drinking while you copy the public binge drinking -- you know it's whether -- older whether you're younger is that it impairs judgment there's an increased number of work related injuries an increased number backward as you -- Iraq. -- car accident so you know just plant be careful drink responsibly. And that that we don't -- and of electric and mark -- that is if he kept."

" You have to like good advice. Now we gonna go to that last headline in this of course. Will bring us back to the theme of the show which is long -- you know we're talking about stadium on who looked just like you did grow. -- longevity and it seems now that in America the life expectancy has reached an all time high of people. You know I guess dine at the age of 78 -- surviving the age of 78. I think this is good news but the question is why is the did longevity. The American public going up."

" While I think serve for two reasons one I think Americans are taking better care of themselves I think we've definitely over the last. You know 1020 years or so has have pushed it at a -- a healthier diet. Better exercise more exercise so I think Americans are doing that we've also. You know him at a huge publicity camp playing campaign to stop smoking so that's also helped as well. Then the other I think this week we focus on preventative. Medicine so we are telling laments the get mammograms them starting at age of forty were pretty vigilant about it colonoscopy that done earlier. -- screening people for high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease has also improved. So if Bennett of medicine common healthier lifestyles and I think those two combinations. And what we've seen as a result of that is that we've seen that there's been decreased number of deaths. In cardiovascular deep respect 5% cancer now what."

" Was it in nineteen in the 1900."

" Be that the agent. Immortality ancient but that's what yeah 46 4647."

" We'll come along way come -- nineteen that's another 3040 is right yeah that's right I can only imagine what's gonna be in the year 3000 that's right."

" We might be a 150 years old and it got and it took."

" Only a lot of new book out by then outlook that the a lot of Botox needed by."

" Offending other things is that I treatments affect you and you can see that by the HIV rates come down by 10% as well so. So I treatments -- improved how parents is that this good we're heading in the right direction and I had."

" All right well -- thank you so much you know. You give us some good and bad news nonetheless thanks conduct hysterical because it was -- news headlines and you really those elements of everything. Okay up next M red -- many might want."

" But this week's many plus one I've been throughout my old friend Chris Killen. Better known as the medicine hunter our mission."

" Find food so we'll keep me young. Chris -- researchers natural remedies all over the world from the Amazon to Siberia. And he says the fountain of youth might be found in foods particularly in spices."

" So this is one of the best places in New York to get Middle East despite. Coldest -- let's say they have out. That's the best -- small world so basically -- is -- who -- if she would delicious. This is look at this beautiful store."

" First album despise hunt -- an anti inflammatory. It looks like a little like it carry. It does look like you care doesn't taste like they care now. It's not that it has. A difficult slavery in little strong. There's some evidence good evidence that the ingredients in tumor groups which you get when you either -- like a yellow curry. Actually help to prevent. The amyloid deposits in the brain that are part of alzheimer's disease. "

" Next up black -- Chris says it is aged it has the same benefits as regular garlic it lowers bad cholesterol increases good cholesterol. And stops inflammation in the arteries. I was curious about the takes. Live longer I want a little longer that's the whole thing."

" Sweet week. What that hack it tastes like a -- I was expecting this to be able nasty actually gonna say this is delicious. I mean we're not gonna be very comfortable but. It is delicious time to turn up the heat. For cardiovascular health there -- few foods that are better for you than hot peppers I'm all for that so let's try it. And."

" Well. The hall. No doubt is one of."

" Hot and spicy. Pepper on -- have been. Manning -- gonna have to get you any MTA. -- they get it cold beer wow. While my eyes water I have revenge on the brain. Not gonna make what it reduces by please. Just once. No. They're backing away -- Com. -- I gotta do now that they'll bite. Bite. Okay so you so -- side Palestine to do longevity many style. And stop all this is your longevity secret well this is antioxidants that okay okay okay you know now the age of my -- with the coldest on record."

" Which by the way and it says."

" Nice and soft see this is longevity but all the -- okay. -- was -- medical technique is this program. Okay but it would take a bite correct. You know. -- Yeah."

" My thanks to Chris for indulging me that little bit at the end. The -- and I have been joking about wine and chocolate being mentioned all the time the quality -- chocolate and red wine are good for you.
