CIA Press Pounce

" Matter how you look at it is a very very rough time for the CIA and we've never needed the more than we need them now. New York congressman Peter King there reacting to the news this week that the Justice Department is planning to look into possible abuse of prisoners. By CIA interrogators. That news came on Monday when long secret CIA documents were also released. Here's how the New York Times played the news investigation -- ordered into CIA abuse charges. And the story was still on the front page news on -- in the times on Friday when the paper -- with this story. Abuse issue puts Justice Department and CIA at odds -- and you saw the headlines you've seen how it's been covered all week. The press pounced on the story."

" Whose -- they'll well I think that Eric Holder is on his way to a profile in courage. Treatment here you're saying that he won the argument within the administration he -- he -- administration and he won the all important New York time straw poll which said we're for him. But look there -- three stories here there's a story that has Washington fixated which is Eric Holder versus Leon Panetta and the CIA and investigations and talks on. Then there's the larger story rippling across the country which is the -- Of these CIA agents and contractors these grunts in the war on terror who are about get. In the neck and then there's that violated the other story which is what I'll -- is doing there to say they're laughing in a cave somewhere saying America about to destroy itself. And we're gonna it's gonna sit and watch well Judy you worked at times you also -- the national security I mean is that is the press coverage focusing on the national security implications of the CIA thing. Or is that all about politics."

" Now I think it's about votes and it's legitimately about vote because the director of the CIA isn't a very important dire should be in Washington. And -- dissing of him says a great deal about. This administration. And the president's attitude towards that institution. Which on one hand he says he needs and the facts and gives a guarantee that no one who filed the law will be prosecuted. And the next day does something like this which is viewed. Especially by the Republicans as undercutting the agency and Leon Panetta so it's a fascinating story politically and substantively."

" We have reporters adequately -- the point that this investigation has been done before by the inspector general of the CIA I don't think so I think that the New York Times story on Friday pointed out. That they had been investigated before that no charges have been filed a federal lack of history and perspective the LA times had a very good piece. Which they talked about how you know Cheney -- this proves that he was dry but the report also doesn't really say that so I think reporters. -- give -- the perspective I think unfortunately you now have a situation where most Americans are gonna go wait a minute they're dissing -- CIA guy. And and they're undercutting him Eric Holder had a very flattering piece in Newsweek. We just -- people at the CIA ran ads here comes here come indictments here comes something against us and that's regrettable and it."

" the press pick favorites Andrea I mean Dick Cheney whom she just mentioned Dick Cheney it is is the fact that. Well is the treatment that he's getting in the press doesn't suggest that many in the media are still -- eager to -- punch back at him after the Bush Administration."

" Oh absolutely I think this is that's the point of this entire investigation ultimately they want cheneys had they would love nothing more than to have Cheney and Rumsfeld called it. And interrogated look I think this is bad politics and it's bad policy. You know declaring going from declaring a war on terror now war on the CIA Obama's gonna lose this one and you know I think every president deserves a vacation. They did they deserve a vacation but this is not the week to take -- he's lost control the message on the CIA. He's lost control the deficit which we'll get in later he's lost control of the health care debate. In this. In this story right now is they're gonna lose this time."

It's really kind of denial pushing a way of responsibility to placate. The left wing of the party I don't think that we've seen that -- Quite well -- had."

" Well I don't know I mean to be fair to Eric Holder you know he has said the facts what he's read. And you know these facts have led him to think that we need to have an investigation mean we shouldn't be as reporters in the business of saying whether Obama's --"

" Immediately heavy fire and how do you have not covered what Eric Holder has said previously in April that he does not believe that he people who are doing their job trying to -- American should be prosecuted. They also haven't really covered what the administration is set in past that this is a total about face. You know it's just."

" In fact that I think the -- half pointing that out they really have. What we don't know we really need more facts about this we need facts about. Aren't change claim for example did this work did miss work I think we still need not."
