'In a World of Trouble'

" just heard President Obama talking about Afghanistan but reforming health care is also at the top of the agenda today the president met with former senate majority leader Tom Daschle. Daschle brought in to help the White House put together a deal in the Senate the theory here is that he knows the players he knows what makes those players tick. Let's bring in Bill Sammon he has no Washington managing editor and vice president of news and bill what a week and yet we started to -- with Kathleen today is the health and Human Services Secretary saying well. The public option is an essential the president said well it's just a sliver of the plan and one hour back to this thing being in full bloom I wanna put this poll up -- This is the latest Rasmussen -- and it says without the public option. That 12%. Is the number of Democrats who would strongly support health care reform and -- yet Nancy Pelosi saying. There will be no yesterday rather there will be no -- Without the public option we're back to stand up."

" Bill. It's -- disasters we can really August has been a generally a cruel month to President Obama. Who -- was enjoying such wide popularity up until this month and now it seems to be spiraling downward. You have a free fall in the polls for not just his approval but for his handling of health care. You have increasing talk -- this early stage of the game. That the very expected Republican gains in next year's mid terms are going to be larger. Then everybody anticipated. You have people like George Stephanopoulos. You know saying things like while the public thinks that he's in over his head. I mean when you got George Stephanopoulos talking about whether Barack -- in over his head. Barack Obama is in a world of trouble I remember in August. Actually September of President Bush's first year Stanley Greenberg the democratic pollster did a poll that showed. A lot of Americans -- President Bush was in -- had -- course that was just before the the September 11 attacks. And and they were sort of the Democrats were sort of rubbing their hands together with the believe that they had been. Given such a a vulnerable opponent in the form of George W. Bush. Well now the shoes on the other foot and I I just am amazed at how Obama's fortunes have turned south."

" In recent weeks I guess what's the biggest concern -- the White House bill is the fact that -- you know Republicans against you but you look at these numbers of independents and they are fleeing and they're fleeing in droves and I guess the question has to be. It if you begin to govern from the left which looks like -- if you look at the clock most Americans are kind of between five and seven right any if you start going over there. What are the political consequences aside from the 2010 midterm elections mean what's the fallout if you start to govern too much from the left."

" Well you know I think. I think a lot of people on both sides of the -- generally acknowledged that America is probably still a slightly right of center country. In the main. So what that the fallout is that good independents are breaking against. President Obama as you saw in the Washington Post poll that was revealed this morning. Not only independence but another crucial. Constituencies seniors. I mean seniors the people who actually vote in mid term elections. Remember -- much was made of the youth vote during the presidential election we can argue about how much that actually went up but I mean it did give the presidential elections tend to excite young voters in -- to -- the -- They don't come out for the mid terms the seniors do in the seniors are the ones who are very worried about this health care plan. Because they're hearing these horror stories out of Canada and Britain and so there's a lot for Democrats to be worried about I mean. Obviously the political landscape can change dramatically one where -- in the next you know fourteen months or whatever it is but right now it's looking very grim for Democrats."
