" Barry let's talk about the new media site because you come at this you know you'll. You let your colleagues. Can -- electronic media or the web media world. Are really what's taking a lot of the readers away from. The -- the daily news. Time magazine even. How do you sort of do you sort of look at that the world this world of sports journalism. And -- role in it and and give us a little glimpse into the future as far as where --"

" My background is -- Princeton is right so taken with you sort of kind of the changing of the -- sort of way where the prince has been reduced someone. I'm not actually I hope and I'm not taking these guys jobs because there really good and I think that should be more. Print and I think people need to get up every morning and read your newspapers. What's happened with the Internet and and I think it even now drills down to twittering to suites. Where if Shaq that's something he -- and -- OK we have to go to him. To get the information it's it's not even like of them of the hour so okay what's he doing this moment if -- keep -- on everybody's I think futures. Everybody has to stay on -- going after the same stories. The you know we're talking about sports marketing particular I come from some looking at a -- is Lance Armstrong and Nike coming out with a campaign. You know for him being open toward fronts I need to get that first so I can get it out there might not be the -- stuff that these guys look at. Maybe secondary coverage or something like the next day but I need it for me anything. -- I need to get my sore spot sources -- people -- a lot of it is the same stage to sing that nucleus of people calling you people getting information would you call people trusting you to give you the information -- now you competing against. No plot is around there and people yet visited Iraq did something about it site. Okay but where you're getting information from the have to know your your reliable you're telling the truth to come back you to read your information. Some competing against you know immediately -- competing against. Bloggers and justice and photographers are competing against people with cell phones but you can get that photo instantaneously but then and if you look at it in Sports Illustrated time that we can get. The better shot you know -- what happened with them. Which helps you know it and then there's swimming meet you one by 100 of a second opinion when you get that -- to go. So there's a way that traditional media and the new media -- people the right information and it just tell them. I'm getting the information you want and getting it first and you it's reliable."

" So it seems Domonique in I remember when I was in journalism school. I remember -- class where professor. You know sort of -- out there and this is in the late eighties. That in ten or fifteen years. That very evening newscasts. On NBC CBS and ABC -- not going to be as relevant or as important as they wear. At the time and I remember thinking you know. This -- talking about he's not of course they're gonna be relevant -- Peter Jennings and you know Dan rather and Tom -- are always going to be -- like the number well I mean he was obviously very right and we have seen you know in the years that path. The way that so many different there are so many different ways for people to get. Information right now and for those young people in the room who are hoping for careers in this business. I think -- a lot more opportunities. For them so in a lot of ways it's a very exciting time to be -- And entering into the media business because there's so many different outlets for for people right."

" That is true and that university Alan and I was majoring in need patience I initially won -- televisions work. And then years later I saw that there are many opportunities opening up on the web and out Twitter -- people that are. The logging instantly with the media and so yes I think the opportunities have grounds that they actually I don't think it's gonna knock out. The big picture story in that story they think those are gonna be here this day however. We know that some. Media outlets are now. Diminishing. Slowly but they are diminishing but I think there will be quick hits that you know people -- and do more and more on the web or going to be able to view more practically to -- view. Or it'll be a little bit more creative on how I felt I think pretty young people that are interested. And media career in sports like being -- more career opportunities and maybe it's time for them to be a little bit more creative and innovative and develop something -- the."

" So -- this is the question that everybody in this room. Everyone's standing up. And next to -- in the competent. How to like -- efforts job. If you're interested in a career in sports journalism how do you -- and if you're not an Olympic star or -- don't have a background as. An actual athlete you're just someone who loves sports. You loved writing you -- telling stories you loved. Meeting. You know interest in people and talking about what you know what they're up to. How do you break into the --"

" They sit in today's world -- folks behind us know how to write a story. -- if you folks get yourself a camera. Go -- and video you're interviews no cut that video put it on the way it did so much so much harder. But as you said I mean there's so many more opportunities and and this -- world out there. So be able to do everything. You know. Operate the camera cut the video. You know do you read and write the story it's more challenging. And -- with the challenges of getting your first job now is the Internet outlets. You're making a living on the Internet right now there's there's certain exceptions Yahoo! yes -- that -- you know how over the Internet sites going to be able to survive -- Are they gonna create a model. On -- own so that they can sustain themselves and hire people where you can make a living be it Internet only journalist and acts. That's where he's kind of -- right now you know there's there's blocks and everything that. -- if you blockers are able to you know make a living blocking so it's -- to be up to -- the -- for -- to figure out. You know daily news.com combat you know survive on its own without the -- product and time dot com and everything everyone's going through that and that's -- be. World flexes whether. You know Internet only consists you know revenue models that sustain -- that sustains itself and can survive --"

" What do you think what would you tell these young people here and -- the people who might be watching that lower interest and career sports journalism. With that with everything changing the way that it is right now."

" What's the best way to breaking news with these these -- Race I would say above all else out there. Nothing new technology will never. Let me just -- and getting. Shaking hands. And making connections. Once -- there's so many people -- only -- schools coming out to me the residences like. You know again and fifteen day. And they all can do as you say the same things they've all -- those things from have they're all. You can put him picking a week that idea there's this thing. -- the same background it's you look at their references. They connected. Who can you call you know -- scouting report and I don't think as long as businesses. Press box and just making friends connections shaking hands ever known to. Go -- that is that is to me one. Party's. -- ambulance you know -- you know. Much you can make -- connection. Think of you. He knows me. Your first impressions so important business. You agree that press -- connection. There. And sometimes you go on them -- people don't want. The you know the old veterans sports -- that you know me. You know. People coming into their territory. I think if you try it. You refused to you know I think that's -- do -- I'm working toward yours. Very. And lots of kids come into the games coming practices. And I think a lot of them. Good numbers really because there's users. As a because as a -- that is owed them. The few people that you can't swallow -- out there make connections and do the right thing that probably."

" What do you think about that the idea of making connections. -- the gone up to you know. Some of the more veteran journalist and producing yourself. It's it's -- that the great idea to me that I've actually gotten in -- news world as well but. First you've got to get credentials -- you've got to get them and they'll you that the press box. So for a lot of these young people out there. You know who would love to go cover a Yankee game. And how -- party and start. Well -- handy."

" I completely agree but -- I think. I know -- itself by some old hands really. Forget that and I think -- stick it -- The press box and into the margins of the sports world -- the -- people line up on the story guys. I've been doing it for a long time sometimes there. Programs have assistant and there -- I don't know -- there because there actually are an -- but. There in their world and people look -- something obvious story in in the middle of nowhere. Something here something. That's a good story that you might notice and that brings back at -- hand when he goes. And I don't think -- Really got started I didn't feel like it started here in New York -- and new York College. But I kind of -- Pretty far field covered ski racing. Which nobody really -- major newspapers ignored. Obvious what you that it happened to Vermont. Living in Colorado. And -- in Europe and and Miller got and I kind of had the authority at that point to write about. For major publications they trusted me and that's when those connections that made -- can't be. Also -- and -- getting out of the obvious -- And networks. And I -- the Little League and yet you're going -- journalism and nine."

" It's true. But here. But Barry. Let's talk about your path a little bit because you a moment ago you started in print. Before. Two where -- so will what is what is -- sort of traditional career. Track. For someone who does what you do -- A lot easier to start your own blog but. As was mentioned it's very few bloggers -- actually living so what would you recommend people do. You know who would like."

" sort of saying track graduate Queens College in San Francisco substance thing in new York and on let me be a little fish and huge city. I went to a different -- Predicts that. What can happen -- San Francisco about San Francisco so if you didn't it if you get an -- sort of you know sort of working Francis Ford Coppola -- magazine network it was I started doing soccer and some. Some things like that -- And I was able to call people go. I've got this story you know the giants are out there Leo RAZR out there you know what people on the east coast. You know back you didn't have you know -- even now they're coming back so. Who's covering this stuff in San Francisco org you wanna be I spoke to disguise activists but the players on the team on -- interested. I think again when it goes back to his use establishing your own credentials and and it's always you know stocks and cited always has to be intuitively he -- the left to right. If you're into sports journalism you don't have to be. A sports night but you have to -- I like sports enough that if by look at -- game on this sort of -- enough that you're listening to music. He's you can hear the baseline you can unity lead guitar it's not just human listening to the music if you go to -- sports game. But you watch what you're talking about the guys on the bench that likes it now watch and everything it's going on the guys in the bullpen and great stories because there just. They talk -- which wanted to talk into the fans they see the star players. You know get thrown out of the game and -- manager and -- the clubhouse and answer. So his waist again you know I think that they know from going too far trying to yeah its its you say you're you have to have a love for writing and -- and it's sports journalism all of you put that love of sports and there. Be able to go in there and say. I'm seeing something here and you know I've looked in the paper today and nobody's written about this and -- the story and go with your instincts -- Davis. I think that story you know make a call for significant on a newspaper something you can say don't count -- you know. I'm I'm interested not so this guy you know walking around -- he's like on the team -- was on the bench kind of you know whatever it is right. You just have to have that instinct -- it's a lot a lot of you know whatever told me -- internal. Where you have to. Something inside clicks and those that seems to -- and follow up and what kinds of statins but you know. Along the way you learn what today and and what's not and and if you get something clicks -- That's a start building up your reputation whether it's in printer and in new medium -- again. -- and trying to differentiate my sites from blogs where it's not just me going -- is an editorial about the best players they Rodham trying to go. You know David Beckham's back this week. Only dozens of people covered is a story that he was out now ways the first edition of 700 media's media members -- credential. Now only few dozens of the stories. He is he gone for good in in the USC can play for compliments and then. Yes -- it's something clicks it doesn't really follow that story goes it goes customers' names and look what I got I got this story and people have to -- to you -- you know I trust you. With what -- writing and I'm giving you information you can write about as -- know people read your story."

" How about when. When sports stories -- over. And become. Front page stories news stories. And not just -- major newspapers' stories this sort of make their way you know off the sports pages that. In just the last week. We had. -- horrible cases. We had obviously the Steve -- murder on July 4. Which became front page news all over the country saw -- outpouring of grief. Down in Tennessee. -- this man who was leading. A much different kind of life privately then that he was leading publicly. And we had that the murder. God -- Arturo -- this past weekend. I was here working actually on Saturday afternoon when it started crossing the wires and I think it's the big story -- story you know and sure enough we found out. Later that night next morning that his wife. Is being held now and charged with his with his death. You either either sports figures. Who become. News headlines. And maybe I think you're -- person start because you know here we've got this this book that you've written about Roger Clemens. You know -- know -- do is look on the back and this is obviously Roger Clemens wearing. His uniform but rather. You know taking the oath in front of congressional committee. Who is investigating -- that the use of steroids and sports. So really I guess that my reason for bringing this up is that. And sports and I mention this at the beginning that followed the scene. Code of ethics the -- rules. Of journalism apply even though you're here you're covering guys -- and women who make a living you know putting on -- to go out. And competing on you -- the kind of and athletic --"

" Yeah it's it's very it's very hard I think a lot of people struggle with it. Myself included in that you. You know these are inspiring people and that's why -- People like sports is because -- fire and that you yet to come -- it was skeptically you have to. You can't become a sports journalists because he loves sports and you love athletes that that could be a total disaster because you have to you have to be."

" Loyal to your readers from Austin and knows it. There's lies in the sports world this whopping lies in the sports world just like there are."

" Everywhere else and your job is to. Not perpetuate those lies in the break them down and and Roger Clemens is -- very extreme example. -- using the same ethics -- have to be if you journalist."

viewing tips when you -- book signing and you -- good luck Devil Rays on my book will now there's the rays and other in first place there on the covers Sports Illustrated and you don't mention them. Why is that I soon will windy I promised and by the -- we did at Delray highlights on. Earlier in the week Helen writes in says Brian your story that you baseball on Fox & Friends in the -- talk later about in your blog. Is simply outrageous and the stories essentially this Major League Baseball stop in Little League team from. -- hearing the Major League logos on their Little League out this because they're not paying the licensing fee or going to be licensed merchandise that holds their stuff. Making other teams which two teams like the bulldogs and the Devil Rays because in -- longer Major League team . I don't really think -- salaries I think Major League Baseball actually has a corporation their money making business they want kids to wear -- there's some control of the product. The reports have to that Little League to five from a licensed merchant right there reaching everybody else does it I think they should do. Well they make a base within the bad guys I actually think. Major League Baseball is doing fine business practices and now you're forced to play on remaining teams like the sting -- Oh by the way
