" A Good Friday afternoon everyone welcome -- gains on those Clinton Morissette you -- Friday show. We've got a lot to talk about today of course speed iPhone release stage in nineteen there was -- bags now already early last night in the rain Alaska's it was -- outrage here in New York City. I'm and you know element yet but -- that much of their people lined up in gadget guy's head some pictures and video these people out there in the rain. But we've got a great panel for you today we're gonna talk iPhone we're -- pretty much talk eighteen team bashing a little bit I'll be doing enough and will be as well. Get your emails and can -- you know the strategy but foxnews.com. Also -- Morse on Twitter. Let's introduce part of our panel now we're still waiting for one person via Skype. Peter Rojas is the founder. Former founder. I guess you'll always still founder and obviously we never stop does that when your president you're never enough formal former president. 44. Founder of and -- dot com current founder of GD GT dot com. Which is about to launch was a few weeks and -- that you could you guys finally announced during your life -- coverage. WW TCU guys close. It's very plus -- podcast and let us here yet and check it out to great podcast that you and -- you Ryan Block great podcasts go down all of the we just talked about mostly. You just focus on one or 23 gadgets -- pick you know you can like 35 different gadgets that work on that some news about yeah. These guys -- stuff so check them -- sitting next to him is Paul Miller is right for engadget dot com. You were feeling reverence. Peter because he -- helped create this a lot of but love and respect -- the yeah. It so what was it in Paul's writing that that that brought you -- That you found interesting about it."

" It's funny because. Usually when would you call for writers and our new bloggers at engadget I get usually between 500000. Applications and I ask elections and it some writing samples and to do so but. Sample one about whatever they want. But hopefully accurately it yeah down. I would just need to dedicate few hours every day and go through and done I just remember reading all applications and end up right in the right kind of mix knowledgeably about technology and compassionate same passion for the stuff and also kind of some a little bit of reverence towards him and you know being able to write really well right clarity and -- it was something that was really important for me constantly gadget and homelessness people do you don't exactly. --"

" And it's nice. Almost warriors did check out -- columns what's your latest -- you were customs points yet covered the the iPhone launch pad at the Q. Which is the Fifth Avenue apple store. Yes it. I stopped although and gadgets and if so you know on the love of Ross Rubin. And PD group of course they're lead analyst for covering every consumer electronics we love having -- show thanks to the brains. And trucks. And can't re big fans can -- Mac OS-X podcast check it out listen to -- every morning as part of my morning routine just after the shower. I'm just after so things. Thank -- and I can't -- also because we're going to speak as loudly enough and we have been davis' can host a great podcast everything Mac related. On Mac OS-X dot com he also due -- six which you get a chance to. Download on the weekends."

" Correct correct it's they -- as of preemption sort of help support Mac OS candidate. It's not straight news it's more or just you know sort of going -- a little bit yeah but not completely and toward realizing that sort of stepping outside it."

" Well about a podcast is like. Ten minutes sometimes premature ten minutes roughly give or take and -- you headed out of park every time just quickly when you quit you -- today's news Mac Mac news fifties. Yeah. On we're still waiting on 11 gets via Skype with us assistant -- any questions you have today regarding iPhone previous launch anything you will throw it out here we'll discuss -- at all. All right so first impressions today launched apple stores open at 8 AM today. As I said people waiting in line for the three yes. First impressions from -- hands on here's some. There's much people this is actually a little earlier -- woman dressed up as an iPhone walking around. First impressions guys -- think of when you guys had hands on."

" Well I think that. It's you know to -- mental. You know a lot of -- points up or someplace. Strength or. Or let it work. But I think when these. You know when I first came out. Here's -- here's one thing that people. Is it. It's easy. -- four. But most. Or rent and I think by decency. Things. -- How satisfied are you -- but I think it's imminent it's gonna make and you can see it differently and had to you know -- yes. And fraud -- Not. -- selling -- of great victories it yes right now but I think. It's gonna help further entrench the iPhone so. Now. Let's go around here -- guessing."

" Yeah you. The great thing about Regis of this because it's such a the -- almost exactly the thing. The exact same casing actually. Drawback. Of the fact that right now it's 99 from three easier to honor so it's it's pretty it's pretty easy twenty community. Yes. And and it like mess anything up and pay -- three point oh software. To all the existing iPhone users was -- and you. They for phones normally all kind of isolated and apple will also -- approaching. Like a computer where you get a new operatives and keep on adding things to it which did kind of slow down over one hoping three point now. The new -- that new OS four. The iPhone would. Pep up all the phones and apple chose to you. Do that with a new processor and your phone. But that there are a lot of drawbacks and what it's not but it really exciting. Launch -- three US which is you know. Yeah not not -- people were lined up -- universal moment. A couple of guys there. Left -- Really sad miserable man yeah. I interviewed yesterday. But there's still you know a lot of people for what is. It's just the phone and and the world lot of people this morning for for the finance -- it was it was pretty pretty good."

" And certain certainly that's what will turn out. Would be I would consider to be considered great success for just about any other handset on the market. And while may not be as many people's we saw for the launch of the iPhone three G. It certainly speaks to a lot of the consumer anticipation. About the about the improvements in the device which are. Incremental in I think the meaning of the device itself the three GS. Just just just goes to show that apple is thinking about this as an incremental upgrade. I'm sure they had decided not to keep the older model on the market and price -- that this would have just in the new iPhone three G. Yeah but they need is some way to distinguish."

" An -- on your show happening. This has been very careful about saying yes yes it we have put a space in between the -- Yes. And what your thoughts on it because you're not you're not you're gonna get one I have. Not anytime soon I'm Linda and I'm chipping out afterwards and Helen and I'm in December person. No my household will get one but I think I'm not that. And back and forth I can't decide on -- one. Via either way. There're couple things I'm wondering about I mean are people sort of getting swept up anyway though because it was a story that came out earlier today AT&T. Finally the -- palm -- thing where these where where. Sprint said it was a record weekend for the palm -- element. AT&T. Came out today and said we need to -- pre orders canceled hundreds of thousands of we're not gonna say them. I'm wondering how many people are actually going hadn't upgrading -- actually all people who are coming here and they skipping the nine dollars and going straight to the 19. Because."

" I think prices and -- a lot of people trying to I mean. And TNT certainly -- Yeah they're confused I mean what happened here this was a cluster mean yes I ordered mine last week. And it was 540. Dollars. And I went ahead and hits and anyway because anyone who's gonna call -- later. I mean that was I knew that this was going to happen and but now the -- and they're coming back down and if you if you got your upgrade the you've got in July. Or August and September and your available for the."

" Threat that the that -- sitting -- right so that a couple of days ago I think if you if you're going to be eligible until August or September than. You go ahead and get the 199 price now because you're literally within weeks I think there -- letters. Being eligible."

" Let me eighteen TI mean that was me out of course has been a big moment here I mean you. Using G1 and he's one of the reasons why you wouldn't get an iPhone not only maybe you like tactile keyboard. But is -- the carrier you know -- people that. I think this sense at all the players are we he writes me explain that yeah. And you and work in ways. In variance let they. Can come off. It's every care. So I would necessarily. You know one. I we've -- I think most people I think a lot more people now. Our base their decisions based on the phone wanna and I don't switch that care East Timor but -- I've really need and it lets you everywhere you can't cover all. And it and a lot of you -- it right. Right. And that's why I think that the number the number one number two questions I guess what time are one of the iPhone can come right. What is the -- going to come rights and what is answer. The -- That at best we might see the iPhone on Verizon nobody here now it would took just 30 is that we all agree is that Andy from there. That I think an anti team we don't know exactly when that lockout or exclusivity period and and we know that -- he's been trying to expand it. But we also know that apple. It's got famously not. Really being actively oil that you miss -- and I I think that they realize that there are going to sell. And it's a 120 million iphones at this point they want to sell you know we mean -- and has the largest subscriber base and you -- they want to reach. Tens of millions more customers here they have to be. -- You know. Spread people who are smaller so they don't just mean. If that doesn't help but I think it's really about you know you."

" You know we've we've also seen statements from Apple's. CEO Tim Cook and that it is really not interest in supporting the CD NA. Standard right now that Verizon uses so I would think it wouldn't just be a question of Verizon beginning to roll out its next generation network. But the point at which that that roll out of that next network which would be similar to AT and t.'s would be available on a national basis."

" Yeah and that's when things that. Most little realizes that we talk about the next generation -- forgy. They're competing standards. Right now with three T Verizon and AT&T are using two different standards and administration for achieve their vote could be on I'll be right. Let's -- it means that -- and actually in theory. Locker Verizon phone that's LT compatible he's -- team but first so apple could actually one else he. IPhone and sell the ball carriers which is why it's been so easy for them to be adopted by. International carriers it's. Moralist and tax tips and yes I'm gonna. The question so what happens then to the price I mean if somebody if Verizon does take an effort you know and AT&T hasn't as well. They're not both going to subsidize it -- the 19 I think that probably will immediately see I mean look at blackberries which are -- across all cared for themselves and -- Okay that would."

" What is what most -- mean what's been interesting to me I've only had about two hours now playing with it. You know one of the things that -- We were just playing with -- video here few minutes ago and I have to say and I've played with -- you know what you know all time -- And I have to say the video on this looks pretty sweet. W -- found and yet found when you guys were doing tests in the video because I there's not a lot of what it called. Stutter that."

" Yes it's that the problem what goes -- cheaper cameras. The way to encode the video -- the way and capture the video. It's especially when you're doing pan -- because you're. Hand held the camera hand held. When the everything in the frame is moving it just it just isn't pleasurable watch in this economy that's better than that iPhone. He's not perfect but it it for for cellphone video. Thirty frames per second it's it's pretty smooth and and I feel like. In some -- in the step of over the --"

" Status the collar and -- your -- you think you had hey what a one minute video that you guys dumped up to YouTube and it took like three minutes over three G. Yeah. So and you had -- interest in question from a reporter went on the name reporter I -- we couldn't. He's injury got. Off. But you got an interesting question reporter about. When -- not be inundated YouTube was ready to handle the -- of the iPhone and what they mean by that thinking it certainly does that Lewis is going to be uploading video constantly."

" Right. -- all certainly is part of YouTube's model to two aggregate. As much consumer video as as possible so. I would characterize that as the classic good problem to have. More consumers are going to YouTube as as the source of there. Shared video and you know this could lead to more compelling video. Going up to YouTube but. Of YouTube's massive user base relatively small percentage of the up loaders and I'm not sure that -- with the iPhone through here."

" Let's bring in the man the legend Walt Mossberg he is hearings this afternoon from. It's he's dead and his office from Wall Street Journal. He's -- yeah great for personal technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal Walt thanks for joining us afternoon. No problem. So your column. On the iPhone of course you talked about one thing you noticed was the speed and you were all over the speed right."

" Yeah well I think that that the principal. Reason get dispersed well. I guess we've been talking about this are ready so forgive me I'm gonna suck your email but. There are two products at least outline as an operating system. Is honest I also can. Installed on any older it's also touch. Others that new -- part -- you -- ES. And if you're talking strictly about hardware that questioned whether somebody upgrade. From their current act on to treat yes sure it may delete -- you're not on first time. I think number one -- yours either warm they have. Is significantly faster processor. Graphics. Processor and on a bunch of -- tweaking some hardware sums up where. Under the covers. And my tennis or EI analyst dramatically and I'd be met -- And the iPhone three GE. At which wasn't. Really slow on by it current standards time. Add a whole range test will be checking out. Download web page. Opening it. That. In camera ready shoot. Or eating grin when you when I did speed measurements that Wi-Fi speed now is the same room at the same time same might -- network. It's three GS was getting 30%. Better speed -- the speed of performances to meet the number one distinguishing. Us."

" Because right when -- we have some sketchy issues here feel free just jump in what is debts informal discussion here shows after -- jump in as we all sort of round table and it up this afternoon. Look for more performance on the network side is AT&T. Upgrades it's network to. A seven point two. Megabit per second version of the three G standard that its costs it's not just the local performance but as they TT upgrades its network. The potential anyway for faster. -- performance I just downloaded the the US open -- But that about an hour ago and Kevin don't mean it Korean buster that. On there. Just launched super fast and talking about Walters talked about is over three G right now watching the US open streaming live right now on the phone and it looks pretty sweet. I've been watching your for the past few minutes and then there's been no stuttering problems singles -- so you were talking about. Noticing. Just with the speed and just and benchmarking moving up that you that you found that even dislikes he's swipes. When you were talking about your show this morning I think you mentioned India not to talk about it just -- swipes I haven't done playing this afternoon up against my three G. And just even going back and forth you know swiping pages was even faster so I mean that's a."

" Starts up faster yet -- CNET Asia had embarrassing video. -- startup times earning a three yes -- and it. It's startups. Faster I want to go back a second. It was may. I just -- saying it's important aren't the -- this is the first. I US smart owner at least the first one from -- CNN I eight Ers aren't all that is got a radio that can handle. Change is coming in the TT network. And possibly in the T-Mobile network actually you're a US net change will double. The theoretical maximum it is actually probably double practical real it is yet. Now. There's going to be a lot of other that be funny blackberries and other cuts on radio -- enough. This just first one but if you're Patricio and you're trying to make a -- us to appreciate. I agree the should not discount that fact is double speed is going to start happening. The latter part of this year certain cities and I'd be rolled out on a gradual basis point where by the end of next year. About half of -- UG. Coverage area. We'll have this end it'll all be complete audio let it. And that may seem a long way ought to not being -- on models by then and all that went. Depending where you live I don't think they've announced the schedule city. You could find yourself. A situation where you could have twice treaties -- watched US open. But only if you have this three GS not a --"

" And we. What's a little break. What's a Make or Break thing for me to buy just want to keep getting ass all the time why I have the first generation I have the three G don't want to upgrade won't buy the new one. Do you think of something that stands out to people as a consumer that says you know that's that's it that's the deal breaker that's what I'm an upgrade or is this sort of a subtle subtle."

" Just to jump again at a speed. Speed speed but. It's really important also -- battery life. This has been a big complaint with the act ultra cheap because EG networks. Are tremendous power sucking. Systems. And you'll notice that whether it's upon pre -- a storm or. The G1 android on or the iPhone -- You relatively the same numbers. At least we're talk time. This thing has really pumped up the battery life. Or music or video. Or -- Internet is why I and I found in my use that. I had much more battery life left at the end of the typical day. Q and a variety of things than I did on three G."

" And today sending in my opinion it is much about the prices that is anything else and I sound crazy but it mean if they're not gonna like it they -- done there -- lots -- rumors about. The of the forward facing videos via the media tent and they don't iChat but that didn't happen is that might have been like a killer thing that everybody who has the three Q -- do it. I think that 99 dollar iPhone. Is actually something that's going to drive people who haven't gotten into it I think certainly waltz right but a lot of that is it seems to me for the power user I mean my mom. It was not a power user as far as both a concern. My mom -- my iPhone and then you start thinking about one because she heard about the 99. She's not interested in spending a 199 dollars -- Is -- tonight -- not -- because she wanted to your phone can do all these there's not just something they can build these things. So what."

" But I think its highs of 99 dollars for the phone but the service contract. Yeah that's what you've done that -- when you look at like the amortized cost of like a three and 99 iPhone over two years for us tonight and now you people thinking that. Think in those terms -- we don't exactly have now I think met him."

" You think you you really think 200 dollars is negligible. This economy I don't think 200 dollars is negligible it on. It's usually yes compared to the service and eat -- up on us. That's a big difference in people's family budgets front -- I'm I would say. If you tell you about price value for crisis that as you as you well know I'm sure and may have mentioned. The one -- united 299. Price points twice the memory they did last year. And obviously that detail. That is service plan -- year's. On on this or any others aren't alone. And even feature. Typically will will -- outweigh. The upfront costs."

" I think he actually got the numbers and talk about hot dogs service plan. You know if someone is if someone if if there's a person you. Can't afford to walk on but can report on the phone but it can also order a hundred dollar service plan. I mean the math doesn't add up to me and I think that the I think it's a matter perception of devices like and that there is a perception. If you don't feel like oh is she from getting a better deal right but if you actually run -- Clinton think I think it out of the sub prime markets that. People think well it's like night it -- this home pertinent nobody down and they don't think about what the monthly -- going to be culinary you know mortgages just --"

" Then they come to repossess -- right exactly. But noted it's a very very good point about -- power of this lower 99 dollar price point to bring in new consumers says yes. On one hand apple is making it more affordable. But how much more of killing would be to consumers who can take paper that conflicts."

" All of it yeah I think the interest of accuracy and act White House. You get it you. If this is not a cheap service and I agree but it's not a hundred dollars either seven. That Demjanjuk. Case any -- they didn't get any text messaging. So if you want the cheapest tech text messaging at seventy odd dollars even that is not on yet however if this is it. Old old old story with cellphone company's that's why give away. Or zero cheat feature phones. -- to a two year contract even if it's fifty dollars a month. People aren't picky about the total cost or sheer."

" Yeah well well. Don't get the text messaging has gotten us known uses Texas. Yeah it was an interesting so you've recently. Maybe Ross you can speak to this and how people are now not even using there cellphones as much to even talking. Anymore I mean mostly become just a it's become a text messaging or an email device mostly. I mean it's it's not so much to pick up that phone call Verizon."

" Well you know the carrier certainly faces a bit of -- marketing challenge particularly among young consumers who are. More apt to reach for the keyboard -- the software keyboard in the case of the iPhone. Where. Adding on. Huge bundles of minutes or roll over as AT&T offers. May have less and less relevance and so we have -- carriers such as ATT and sprint on those. Hundred dollar A month plans or our plans in that neighborhood really make it more about different kinds of bundled a -- features and navigation and war war or adding unlimited text messaging. Live television and and in some cases so so just just really it's about simplifying. The plan and and trying to get some number of of this subscriber base to upgrade. As an alternative to just piling -- minutes on to a point where there are meaningless to consumers."

" Fox is what -- imagine they just rolled out new iPhone dot. Fox Business on line which you can watch streaming. Over the iPhone three G course works better -- And does a check that out iPhone dot Fox Business outlines particles can watch streaming content right well I'm. We'll take this question Diego and Miami is huge disappointment talking about this phone only if you push ready apps no video. No and I masks within reason -- an area. Analysts. Things. Notes have an English one page 55 dollars actually don't know is it 55 dollars price at that -- the rumors don't waste -- out right."

" It's such high it depends on how they can if -- if he treats this like this is what laptop and card. Those plans won't really. Really expensive and and it's and he is clearly has had trouble handling the."

" They come up with we'll be like their Blackberry model where it's inconclusive hotline number that includes the current. Thirty dollar data plan and whatever increments that -- church -- This is -- lottery doesn't want a overcharge or but I I've beaten astonish. If they added 55 dollars year thirty dollar -- I just astonish him."

" Yet he gets that that's part of the price is going to be I think they'll try to I think that what -- he has done -- he's -- thirty dollars data plan and it cost an extra 25 dollars gathering and sprint actually does some things tomorrow ready it's. Smartphones so that that would be -- actually -- mean you know to get unlimited. You know wireless data card for your pop up at sixty dollars month. And."

" Limited by the way -- but by the for countless -- accident I did is they don't necessarily I didn't and he couldn't."

" Yeah Bruce Wilson writes to choose from and he says. It's and you can and text messaging instead I think like eighteen year old daughter is talking for about fifteen minutes a month on iPhone. And text messaging 7000. Tax it's the only way I can contact. Some sort."

" dispute about that it you know we have got all -- we can watch live TV armor for our -- now -- The audio quality doesn't really get a lot better and the compression that they use you know you can't hear them personally. While you're talking. You know maybe phone companies that could do a little more work. Making got a better experience actually talked we're like -- appropriation camera for video chat. Ways who we can enact a little bit better. Through voice and video."

" And I think not -- their interest and I'll tell you why. -- say nobody will do it don't get me wrong but it's not -- meddling in their interest. Which is the same reasoning delayed on this and then next thing which is the same reason that it blocks England. And that is -- networks I'm not only talking about eighteenth -- Their networks are going to buckle. -- another forty million people buy these kinds of devices and use the way people at -- the there are other Smartphones have been blackberries for years but this is the first device that is being used like a computer. Really heavily like a computer not like a corporate email terminal. Not like it being primarily to make voice phone calls or even. Like -- the last guys at -- two -- 7000 SMS messages just relatively little data. This thing is hitting its network in a way that no devices ever it. Any network. And the unfortunate time -- as -- hitting a particularly carrier's network still immature still being built out. So the combination of those things is why. Until -- Prove a given city and they -- you get city by city I tell you. I live in Washington DC and they've done it on of improvement year over the last year but there are other cities they happen. Chile beat up cities and that's why eight calls drop because if I'm watching a streaming. I US open golf tournament there's hundreds of all calls it can't be made on the network Atmel. -- I think that something went up front facing video cameras not beyond apple that -- at him. Tab chats on all day. One of the reasons you don't see it's. East of the -- is that they're extremely conscious that -- network. Can't handle a resilient streaming video -- teenagers wells substitute their acts. There's real there's real real network limitations on the."

" So that it has done to overcome this and who hopefully we see more of this is. If using Wi-Fi and when I'm in my house I get very very bad signal. A very bad signal but I can I can be watching video over Wi-Fi can be using my phone like it's computer and I can't call my moment. Signal indoors but if if I can use my home Internet connection. For those calls. So that's starting to happen with carrier hasn't -- in -- U -- is done via its hand here and."

" I NTT mobile a team bubbles plan works well I tested it repeated use it. -- I would point out. Couple things no other US carrier has adopted called UN -- this. Even call handoff between white alliance so. Nobody else has adopted it. -- it doesn't seem to move the -- very much terms people adopting T-Mobile carrier. But I agree that it's -- companies' interest and it's in the consumer's interest to all floors much -- onto Y by any. Seamlessly. And you know automatically is possible I agree I -- to see much more I see it. Silly use consumer don't have to think about what -- in this thing is actually on it working. There's got to be too conscious of the radio if you should should work. And it and it it's more efficient does better -- it cost wherever it is beyond white -- fine. Well cellular fine whatever it is. So I agree."

" And that and then that also brings us back to horizon a bit because traditionally. Verizon has not had a very Wi-Fi friendly. Policy on its handsets. Hasn't supported Wi-Fi on the handsets so. We we probably will not really CA. A major shift and in terms of those the kinds of video traffic that that can be handled by these devices until yeah that next generation got a little."

" and Verizon are fundamentally different it's like I think you're exactly right beyond that -- is the it's carrier it has. -- Significant commercial Wi-Fi hot spot -- us. An ATP. And of course T-Mobile had a big business and now. Still does and HTT has made any decision just the last I would -- nine months. To really give it up -- bought -- port and eight. Wrestle the way to Starbucks contract from T-Mobile. And by the way did you view. If you want to happen and on tonight on you get free -- spot so. And then you."

" When software. Has made an actual life easier for -- to jump right on yet right out last night -- immediately text versus Williams -- idea."

" What -- you would be why aren't. It doesn't work all the time I it's worked let's start at tried it yet -- want it or else it's great."

" Can you were just playing in the palm pre course and that's it I'm curious now what this does to the palm pre market. You know much was said about it I got to play with -- these really elegant device really well made. Really yeah I thought about it. I I really I thought the acting web -- is really nice and I you know I I just had a great time playing with him running multiple applications what was your sense of when -- and we think this goes to --"

" I didn't get to play with -- prevail on the operating system seemed like it was I would like to -- more time with that yeah. The phone itself bother me. It was really smoke when you slid out that the keyboard I mean why go with this much of the keyboard pianist let the screen anyway when it goes a long way. Like you know with the landscape keyboard -- like with the but this tactic used yeah it felt a little bit like playing. When -- can't -- advocates of the portrait keyboard would say that that facilitates one hand I think."

" I did okay said. And you -- I'm pretty it's out and them. The keyboard actually surprised because in this small and I actually thought I would. Really dislike it and the more honest about that actually it I and much faster on it and I heard that a much better than expected at the landscape. Well I keep I was I was surprised honestly didn't know you -- you I use both but -- if you -- handle them. But you know I think it comes up a lot of people. You -- some people. If -- lakers' trio you know that is the keyboardist and that's really hard. -- heartbeat switch to iPhone because after all people it's not an issue something that I think that's one of the things really great about market right now is that. Actually have once been forced to raise their game considerably so we're seeing a lot of really great -- devices. You know across the market and there are a lot more to come next eight months and I think that you know when we haven't talked about is actually there about a half dozen. Very serious. You know Smartphone operating systems on the market right now there that are all competing for customers for developers competing for. You know handsets. Not obstinate -- respiratory. It's one. But. -- free is something that you home. Stagnated and the development was obviously in response to the iPhone here but it is a great device I think that you know. My complaints about is that you know one might have said. The hardware actually is a little bit there parts of their very beautiful. Things like that that kind of sharp -- around that we -- the to -- that is kind of shocking for devices -- would have just her you know. You sort of think that of the engine be perfect on the right."

" Because you wanted to communicate has a real delicate feeling to it and in your opening it up and I think that's what I think I cut my hand on. But you know I was surprised by that I really want to be honest. Roughly guys think about and we think it does this. We had three days with Paul right and then we get this announcement and 99 dollar iPhone three G what do you think that goes to well yes."

" Leave the 99 dollar. IPhone three G. Puts apple and in and a price range where. It it is in competition with a lot of low over Smartphones and aren't taking advantage of latest technology even a lot of those advanced feature phones. What messaging keyboard so. You know as Peter mentioned where we're still very early in the in the race for developer mind share and and consumer mind share for a lot of these devices. -- and day even if apple experience is a little bit of cannibalization. From the 99 dollar iPhone versus the more feature packed iPhone three G -- it did benefits in the long term because it is its stance to expand its market share."

" Walt I know you had obviously. Spent a lot of time with the palm -- before most of us had a chance to get your hands on it. What is your impression of this do you think that this is. Does this hurt does this hurt their ability to go to market with the palm -- and a larger scale. Or is Verizon maybe six months down the line going to be the thing that really -- home back."

" Well I think it. Two things well one is of course it hurts them. They had real struggle getting the price of it. Of the palm -- even 219. -- know it really isn't like 9190. Yeah hundred dollar rebate except at best buy where there are apparently three or units in each store. You pretty much chance to bring 300 dollars to store -- wait 814 weeks. Or your hundred dollar rebate that's the first thing. So when somebody puts pressure on -- within 99 dollar all that only three weeks or two weeks ago was. Hugely desirable it on 1990s. That's big problems. But there's a bigger pro com. And it isn't has nothing to do with Verizon it -- can't so and that is -- is built upon him. -- you do what the iPhone does used BO real platform golfers. Apple wide variety asked -- and it has almost no apps. And the reason it has almost collapses because. They have not finished their developer tools that are not -- enough. To make him widely and easily available and they admit. And you know I mean I interviewed did Jon Rubinstein who's been -- the company now Juan Roger McNamee who's the guy who's funding company yet -- This conference call geek conference that I run with my colleague Kara swisher. A couple weeks ago on stage they admitted it and built it is not -- well. Silly they they -- on. -- I don't agree actually that that he industrial design is cheap or the edge of the keyboard is a big problem what do we agree or don't agree. It got very good news or the most. People Biden. -- go and download apps and there's like twenty apps out there and may be buying out thirty years but. It you know the Blackberry EU around all the -- apps that aren't in their store and in the ones in store. -- The android is. -- thousand I think something like that obviously the iPhone is this is our leader with it out more. We've got a beach -- gained eight got a -- thousands of maps. And and unique personally that's going to be bigger problem -- and number two problems. Which Verizon might help them quit if that meant -- gets. And that is money or more. I'm apple spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year marketing -- I own an iPod touch -- by the -- you have to think it was that she thinks is one. Kind of him. Slightly differentiated product line. Him -- him we all know is spending. Large amounts not as much as apple I don't think it still hit piece Andy and television. Print online ads. To consumer priced user base so Tom is coming into this. If a company that's. Really giving him -- was getting no revenue mentally started under armour currently -- They have a carrier has lost several million customers. In recent US. And Canada is also a little bit cash apps. And they keep up. Just in the marketing sense with apple and -- and I don't know the answer."

" Well -- yeah. Music but as we have it we have to jump out to a Los Angeles -- remote but I want to see thanks so much Walt. For joining us here on on shows afternoon talking iPhone. What is the latest column are working on. -- All right Walt Mossberg with The Wall Street Journal thanks so much and it's a pleasure having you on fuel we will have again."

" All things. A go ahead roster in house which are an answer -- you -- ten -- spot now but. I was going to say that I agree that apps are going to be key issue moving forward. I'm not sure that there's such a key issue for the next two quarters from number. A lot of consumers fell in love with the iPhone long before there was any kind of -- development. What the device. And and and the other thing I want to say is that. At least for today carrier exclusivity. Really does blogs a lot of competition among these various Smartphones so. Even though the iPhone has been very successful pre customers over two AT&T. The majority of iPhone uses world already -- agency. That's going to be the same case for the very desperate is going to do good job of market that's the existing user base. And that's where a lot of the --"

" Going to come from from the developer standpoint you talk to developers. Regularly and what are you hearing from -- that they are excited about working on this platform is there. Is there something I don't early on it was a struggle would certainly be able to you share information. You know with each other. What are the most excited about for help develop."

" President that I thought I mean I haven't really heard much of anything. In the news stuff I would have to imagine if ever guessing they've got to be excited about having the M. The rating system now just so you don't have to worry now about this objectionable content is going to be kicked out initially to what we're hearing a lot of things that. And about the and that purchases but I haven't heard so much about them lately and I imagine that's going to be huge thing from the developer's side as far as new tools. I mean most of the guys that I thought you're still likely that. Perhaps the party got so they're they're not looking at it going oh now I can and this are looking at it going up and yeah let's see how it goes."

" As of image and push updates. Yeah it's gonna take a little wild. I think for developers put it in a moment tools available through an open it again. This ability to actually be able to push updates and -- you have to route through Apple's servers right because this is what they complaints about. About the happens doesn't multitasking you can't have an -- in the background. So. For him he's in some cases you know mobile social network if you do it you can't have run background and likeness and a word. Friendliness friend you guys -- that it's running and Portsmouth don't want her talent and money on -- but it's. So I think you know this sort of have you know applications pushed out. Updates. Like that will be useful because there's another problem though with the way the user interfaces -- right now and that. You know what happens you get lots month's updates again in for example android handles it by having an an update tray. That it's a stack them up and pulled down that trade at the top and yeah your updates. What I find doesn't what is possible sometimes it'll."

" or bring in our next guest welcome to the panel -- active we're talking everything iPhone but. Well. Hopefully she won't mind Christopher -- from Christopher he's gotten dot com also for what one security dot com is that right a human right URL. It's actually up 40 and one das island dot com buy dot com let's get mall on what you world business. -- thanks for joining us that your -- and thanks for having me. Yeah and then LA so just where you know informal here panel and loved you jump -- we're gonna talk security -- certainly security experts are in talks and security here few seconds. And some interesting things Ross coming out the iPhone with this and."

" Pretty encryption now finally right yeah that is -- that is one of the new features. The the iPhone does hardware encryption 256 -- A AES encryption and I'm sure this will be able to. Talk about. More in depth of the night and but there's some other security aspects to it as well. The ability to a remote wipe of the phone if you lose it you can clear -- have everything removed from -- But they're also perhaps some privacy concerns around. Features such as find my phone where if you lose your phone. It's handy to be able to locate where it is of the fact that post on some privacy versus law."

" Yeah crisper when you think about that some of these new features like that. Well -- why does that exciting right and I think a lot of that from what I've been reading is that -- they wanted to make it sort of another Blackberry killer feature writing at the same with a copy and paste that was something that blackberries than doing for awhile that. He did -- light and keep you know all your corporate data secularist I think it's more exciting than. Than anything but also less than reading nobody knows exactly how's the encryption works yet. And how. How much of encryption is separate from just being able to like your phone. But you know as far as privacy in locating your phone I think of course the benefits outweigh. You know any privacy issues and from what I understand it went up to your mobile me account right so. I'm not sure it's too dangerous do you guys know about that in the past this is."

" If there's. It's -- to pay service you and 99 bucks a year do you think Peter this was smart move by then hating us and mobile me is away maybe this is the one reason to have mobile me. -- I think it you know. Again need to think about three yes is that it's not found that most who have a three -- right now and so it felt the need to run out yet but it's thousands -- have enough of these smaller incremental updates that when you decide to make the job when he decided to upgrade you feel like it's right it's not necessarily have to do right away but. I think right going to be people you know little things and it -- more comfortable about. You know. You can upgrade until better about the upgrade it will help -- line I'm not sure that it's a minute in the make something I have to get my phone right outside if you think an insurance policy -- people never. You know want those things until they have a problem."

" this picture Wednesday. And is. There. -- While there were certain that. The bird -- And you."

" regular phone okay. Chris bridges you cross mobile phone via -- you lost and lost a lot you you lose."

" You know I have been and then in LA's not -- cab -- an item always in my -- but. -- I would always call myself really I I don't know what about you that lots of phone I have mobile needs display this delay its. I found fuse bones. But I will just -- return them to the carrier and today as soon again."

" The right I've actually lost kind of ironic I lost my pre inside my house the day. You all could compete with their of the in my book what one little -- to fund my phone and that -- like with calling itself. Even if the phone's on silent. It'll it'll make -- noisy -- well yeah yeah which I think why can't -- accurate. This is a -- you're gonna Christopher what do you do add up for -- spyware dot com what sort of things are you looking at right now -- in that space."

" Well Fuld asked -- commons is a little bit specialized of that and really -- about the latest viruses latest Trojan. The latest -- you know sometimes a few Mac Trojan but as you know that's pretty rare. And that I'm just reading about you know the latest and rogue anti spyware there's always tons of fake anti spyware out that. Sun and fighting crime that way so again it's very particular it's always the latest threat and how to remove it. And and that's about it -- is looking for help."

" The question I would get from people which is you know if they've got. They've got a firewall running. And my dad had you know -- running firewalls. I might -- what you. Again you're not downloading crazy -- to your realtor you're just doing one thing you're checking email occasionally -- Google like crazy. Yeah unity how -- fire -- set up are we over protecting ourselves and this is also like. You know slowing computers down across this country. That."

" You know I I don't think there is. Oh wait over protect yourself because these things are selling -- and a lot of trojans disable antivirus software so it's always good to have a bunch of different types of security software running. So you know even though you know data -- eleven legislate. -- like you said that there on Google either opening family's picture attachments Yunnan and well you never know and these things are so -- at disguising themselves. You know like worms are so good at. You don't just getting out there and making you think that. A gimmick that family pictures -- it's I don't think there is a -- over protect yourself really and think you should that give your data high 5% to."

" What do you think about this is an issue. I think if you're a novice at this company doesn't hurt. Some spyware and anti spyware software or firewall. I percent of -- any antivirus software or fire mean what's a red flag to you. In terms of let's say yeah well I think I mean one I mean that easiest thing is don't. Install any software that you don't trust right and that usually means don't solve all -- software. It also didn't get attachments from someone that you don't know yeah don't know head. I mean yeah it's really simple things like that. You know. That's the -- yet -- is you know if you get an email from your bank don't click on the link because this product that real."

" Christopher -- we'll -- the most common security. Vulnerabilities news. Well he just mentioned London Phishing emails are so popular and that's well. I mean a lot of them are good looking especially if you get it like at 3 AM. In LA -- a little disoriented and for whatever reason I your computer and you see this email that says like your account has been compromised. -- a very tempting to just click and you know try to fix it but -- But he's right use another click any links in those -- even if it looks. Authentic it's always best to tight. The URL into your browser I mean that's a really popular and really dangerously of this Phishing -- of these engines."

" From you bank your credit card meant that date you just call them back. Yeah -- call. You'll person at the council want more quickly but you have to have no risk. Being hacked and don't call the number in the evening."

" That's enough of that might be some guy in Nigeria's where. --"

" To be customer service and could probably track your website correct that is what it. What is the end -- it happens again. One. -- that's where it's 401 dash spyware dot com check that out. Yet that's. Is. There. And we were out of time guys final final ten seconds each on -- iPhone three he has can go ahead yes. We didn't get into that. Yeah well you know but I don't think. The -- the -- that. Does it matter probably the most to. Yeah I use them. A good -- I think."

" You know it as usual orders as is often the case of apple products it's not necessarily. What they've added and the mass -- But but the weighting that isn't that an accident Paul. You walk in you know the -- about in the I was wondering but but if it's wonderful -- the three point oh software is out there you'll have to upgrade is now building."

" First term. And here we you guys are the same thing and if you I don't like eighteen team that's actually a pretty good option on on this -- cares get that you want -- malignant pre. For sprint and you know there's some good black president it's time for us and."

" Well Peter Rojas is the founder of GTT dot com about to launch partners saw very soon check them out you go there's sign up at -- get the launch information yet on -- diocese and are awesome Paul Miller is right from engadget dot com check his work out there and yet thanks all for being here. And Ross -- from NPD group has always. It's great avenue here and -- listen to download the podcast Mac OS can. If you are Mac lover and you want your information every day is great job Ken thanks much for excellence. -- don't think Walt Mossberg also we had -- earlier and Christopher -- thanks rounded out the speed -- launched in dominant now I can actually go and play with it Lebanon to do TV. And podcasting. You can always download this via iTunes as video podcasts as well thanks -- one I'll see you back here Friday."
