" Headlines. I'm Jennifer Griffin and this is America's news headquarters live from the nation's capital it's time to go beyond the headlines and inside analysis of the big story of the day and a look ahead to how that's going may develop. In coming days today's focus the financial crisis. Retailers hoping to get their normal holiday boost didn't get it holiday retail sales were down almost 8%. Consumers avoided luxury goods and women's retail clothing and household appliances fell nearly 20%. But online shopping with less hard hit Amazon.com announced it had its best year ever could there be a silver lining. General Motors survival may depend on financial paperwork GMAC it's still being mum as to whether it has done all it needs to do to become a bank holding company. A move that would give it access to billions of dollars in federal bailout money the deadline was midnight Friday and it's still not clear whether GMAC will be able to save itself and thus help -- GM. And looking ahead to 2009 the last trading day on Wall Street this year is Wednesday. It's been at this point here so far with stocks the Dow has fallen more than 35% from the start of last year financial experts. Expect trading to be active through Wednesday is that because it can't -- lower several key economic reports are due out next week. And investors are sure to be watching them closely. So is the economy at rock bottom. Well thanks loosen up the strings on loans to customers to go beyond the headlines and look ahead to 2009 we turn to Jonathan -- with capitalist pig dot com. I Jonathan. I can agree to feel nice to see it. Chris I'll tell us have we hit rock bottom yet."
" Well you know I think what -- that is there actually atrocious and abysmally here for the market with all the major indices falling rather sharply. I think what's gotten many analysts are worried is that just because the market to stop falling. Doesn't necessarily mean that their voice for turn around one example for example it is Japan right now the market peaked in the late 1980s and basically has -- not more by an ever since so yes it seemed as if for now the markets south falling but there's really no indication. And a big turnaround is afoot in time soon."
" So where would you put your money -- advice right now to people who are worried about the coming months."
" Well you know this is -- it's just been marked. With major uncertainty and I think a lot of it hasn't had even anything to do with the economics. But really that the political situation right I mean the credit crisis which dominated headlines this year. Really started in the summer of 2007. But it wasn't until the government stepped in and they'll opt out -- Stearns in March of 2008 that at least in my opinion the wheels really fell off the track so you know with so much and certainly in Washington -- I think a lot of people are simply sitting on their hands putting their money in the bank putting it under the mattress. In waiting until the at a financial situation become a little bit more clear in terms of where the government hating you mentioned at the GM's story they're gonna get access to bail -- dollars so with a look at that financial uncertainty still foot a lot of people are. Not putting money to work we just sit in on their hands and and essentially waiting for the next shoe to drop. Thank you very much -- thanks for being with us to."
