The Rancho Mirage compound built by Marion Davies -- actress, Hollywood socialite, and mistress to William Randolph Hearst -- has hit the California market for a smidge under $4 million.

Davies, who began her career in silent films and was a rising comedian in talkies when she became involved with the publishing magnate, built the estate in 1956, five years after Hearst's death.

The compound, which has had three owners since Davies, sits on 2.77 acres and includes a 14,000-square-foot house with nine bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. The gated property, dotted with palm trees, boasts a pond with waterfall, tennis court, and lap pool.

Although the house has been remodeled over the years, "the structure will need some upgrading to bring the interior space to 2016 standards," the listing says.

Davies and Hearst lived together as a couple for years, but they never married, reportedly because Hearst's wife wouldn't grant him a divorce. Hearst died in 1951. Just 11 weeks later, Davies married actor Horace Brown, who inherited the Rancho Mirage estate upon her death from stomach cancer in 1961.

The home is co-listed by Neal Leviton of Rodeo Realty and Bruce Busher of Keller Williams.
