Supreme Court Nominees
President Obama and Vice President Biden have interviewed four candidates to fill the opening on the Supreme Court once Justice Stevens retires. One of these four candidates could become the next U.S. Supreme Court justice if the Senate confirms him or her.

Elena Kagan

Elena Kagan serves as the U.S. solicitor general.  She is the 45th person and first woman to hold the office.  She has served since March 2009 (AP).

Merrick Garland

Merrick Garland serves as a circuit judge on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. He has served since 1997 (AP).

Sidney Thomas

Sidney Thomas serves as a judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  He has served since 1996 (AP).

Diane Wood

Diane Wood serves as a judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and has served since 1995 (AP).
