Illinois Newspapers Call for Blagojevich to Be Impeached, Resign

Virtually every major newspaper in the Prairie State calls for the disgraced governor's ouster.

CHICAGO -- Newspapers across Illinois were quick to call for the ouster of Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

On Tuesday, an editorial in the (Carbondale) Southern Illinoan called for his immediate resignation, while the Mattoon Journal-Gazette & (Charleston) Times-Courier called for impeachment. The Chicago Sun-Times urged either option.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune, (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald, (Springfield) State Journal-Register, (Champaign) News-Gazette and Alton Telegraph all called for resignation. The Rockford Register-Star held out for impeachment. The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald, the (Decatur) Herald & Review and the Belleville News-Democrat said either would be fine. The Sauk Valley Newspapers urged Blagojevich to step aside temporarily, while the (Peoria) Journal Star just wanted him gone.
