RICHMOND, Va. -- Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner is planning to offer a lesson in Virginia-style bipartisanship on Tuesday in his Democratic Convention keynote speech.
Warner acknowledged Monday that the speech may not rouse the masses who are in no mood to think kindly of Republicans or their presumed nominee, John McCain.
But it worked for him in dealing with a Republican General Assembly in Virginia, and he says he's got to talk about what he knows.
Maybe parts of the address won't get much applause, the Senate candidate said in a conference call. But he said he can't run a "centrist" campaign at home and deliver a partisan hatchet job in Denver.
Warner has a strong lead over Republican Jim Gilmore in their race to succeed Senator John Warner, a moderate Republican.
