John McCain told FOX News on Wednesday that he has not made a decision on a running mate, splashing cold water on speculation that he would announce his No. 2 pick while Barack Obama is traveling overseas.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee told "Hannity & Colmes" that he's looking for a candidate who shares similar priorities and who he feels is capable of taking over for him.

But he said he has not made a final decision.

“We’ve said exactly the same thing all along -- that we’ll make the decision when we make it,” McCain added.

McCain also continued to hammer Obama for downplaying the impact of the troop surge in Iraq.

"No rational person could look at the situation in Iraq on the ground that's been there two years ago and say that the surge hasn't succeeded, so it's clear to me there must be political calculations in his judgment, because no rational observer could conclude anything else," McCain told FOX News.

Obama had told CBS News that the surge has helped to reduce violence, but "it doesn't meet our long-term strategic goal." He also said earlier in the week that he still would not have supported the troop surge if he could do it all over again.

McCain, meanwhile, emphasized his belief that the troop surge in Iraq is a successful strategy that should be replicated.

"We know that Afghanistan is a major challenge," he told FOX News. "But the same strategy that succeeded in Iraq hast to be employed in Afghanistan."

While Obama's talks foreign policy overseas, speculation was widespread earlier in the week that McCain's campaign might try to grab some of the attention by making an announcement about his vice presidential pick. Well-placed sources told FOX News the campaign has discussed the merits of unveiling his choice now, and one insider said the media should not discount that possibility.

But so far no announcements have been made, and the campaign is offering no clues.

Reports noted that Cindy McCain is traveling and it's unlikely a decision would be announced without her by her husband's side. Speculation on the vice presidential choice recently has centered on Mitt Romney recently, and Romney's aides said he is on vacation this week in Ontario.

The Boston Herald reported Wednesday that Romney still is near the top of McCain's list. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and several other officials also are thought to be among the top choices for McCain.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday he will not run for vice president on the Republican ticket, adding himself to a growing number of those pulling themselves out of the running.

"Let me be clear: I have said in every private and public conversation, I've got the job that I want," Jindal told FOX News. "And I'll say again on air: I'm not going to be the vice presidential nominee or vice president. I'm going to help Senator McCain get elected, as governor of Louisiana."

But Jindal insiders say he'd take the job if asked. McCain was scheduled to visit New Orleans on Thursday and meet with Jindal, but that trip has been canceled and the meeting postponed because of Hurricane Dolly.

Meanwhile, FOX News obtained an exclusive copy of a letter written by Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode asking McCain campaign manager Rick Davis to consider fellow Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor for the job.

In the letter, Goode told Davis McCain should "look right and not left" in selecting his running mate and described Cantor as "a consistent conservative" who would "energize the Republican base."
