Homeless people in Denver may find themselves in a movie theater or museum instead of near the Democratic National Convention in late August when party enthusiasts come to town to give Barack Obama the presidential nomination, The Rocky Mountain News reports.
The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless plans to hand out hundreds of tickets to movie theaters, local zoos and other spots, as well as transportation to and from such locales. Some shelters also will have expanded hours for day shelters, and donors have provided big-screen televisions so those without stable housing can watch the convention from a distance, the paper reports.
"A person who typically sits under a tree in a park that is now occupied by 1,000 protesters won't have the peace and quiet they're desiring," coalition president John Parvensky told the paper. "Particularly those with mental illness can't cope with crowds."
One volunteer, Kayne Coy, said he sees the move as only sweeping problems under the rug.
"It just sounds like another way to get rid of them," Coy told the paper.
