Bud Day, a former P.O.W. in Vietnam and prominent John McCain supporter, defended the Iraq war in a conference call with reporters by warning that Muslims have threatened to "kill us."
The Miami Herald reports that Day said, "the Muslims have said either we kneel or they're going to kill us." He told the paper that neither he nor McCain advocates the "kneel."
A campaign spokesperson for McCain said Day intended to say Islamic extremists -- an important distinction as some Muslims feel inappropriately discriminated against since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Day participated in the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against John Kerry in 2004.
