ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- It hasn't quite worked out like it was supposed to in New York, one of the key states where voters are choosing presidential candidates Tuesday.

It figured to be a cinch for New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. But now, Giuliani is out of the race. And Clinton is facing an unexpectedly strong challenge from Barack Obama in New York.

Obama probably can't win the popular vote on Clinton's turf, but he could still grab a solid share of the 232 delegates at stake.

A spokesman for the state Democratic Committee calls it "the first time in a long time New Yorkers have had a real voice in the process."

John McCain and Mitt Romney expected to cede New York to Giuliani, but now they'll be battling each other for the 101 delegates in the Republican winner-take-all contest.

To the last minute, state Republican leaders had backed Giuliani. But when he dropped out, the party quickly endorsed McCain -- who has endorsements from Giuliani and from the powerful majority leader of the state Senate.
