Presidential candidates Mike Huckabee won the most support from Republicans in Alabama on Tuesday while Barack Obama became the Democratic winner in the state's primary.

Huckabee's win secured another southern state. He also picked up Georgia, Tennessee and Arkansas, which he used to govern.

Huckabee defeated Republican rivals John McCain and Mitt Romney in Alabama by winning over conservative and evangelical Christian voters, exit polls showed. Nearly eight in 10 Republican voters in Alabama described themselves as evangelical or born-again Christians. Nearly half of those voters chose Huckabee, a Baptist minister.

Romney, who is Mormon, received support from only 15 percent of those voters.

Obama picked up the Democratic win through black voters and young supporters, according to exit polls.

The Clinton campaign blamed the loss on being outspent and outstaffed by the Obama campaign. The Obama campaign spent more than $356,000 on television advertisements in the state, compared to the Clinton's campaign tally of $80,000, according to Phil Singer spokesman for the Clinton campaign.

Clinton had campaign offices in Birmingham and Mobile compared to Obama's offices in Huntsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery.
