About the bill

The bill, the Suspending the Individual Mandate Penalty Law Equals Fairness Act, would delay for one year the tax penalty under Obamacare for individuals who fail to purchase minimum health care coverage and are not exempt from the mandate. Under the bill, the penalty would be delayed until January 2015. The tax penalties are being phased in over three years and the bill would also delay some of the phase-in and indexing requirements. Obama has threatened to veto the bill. Under current law, the penalty in 2014 will be a minimum of $95 per person, or 1 percent of taxable income, whichever is greater. But, under current law, the penalties will go up to $325 or 2 percent in 2015, and $695 or 2.5 percent in 2016.
