NY gov bans taxpayer-funded travel to NC over gender law

N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order Monday banning state employees from using taxpayer funds to travel to North Carolina on nonessential work.
The Democratic governor signed E.O. 155 "to ban any such publicly funded or publicly sponsored travel to such location, unless such travel is necessary for the enforcement of New York State law, to meet prior contractual obligations, or for the protection of public health, welfare, and safety."
The move is the latest political response to Republican Gov. Pat McCrory's Friday approval of legislation by the N.C. state assembly that maintains, in instances of gender-specific facilities, individuals must use that which is identified on his or her birth certificate. In addition, the law bans cities and municipalities from passing laws that would seek to circumvent the overarching state law.
But Cuomo and others, including Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, have said the move will block anti-discrimination protections for gay, lesbian and transgender people.
