Powell decries tone of GOP campaign

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, in an interview with NPR, lamented the tone of the Republican presidential race and urged fellow party members to “become more respectful of each other.”

Powell commented on the tone of the race as he discussed the death and legacy of former first lady Nancy Reagan. He contrasted the “civility” of former President Reagan with what he sees on the GOP campaign trail now.

“To stand there and do junior high school tricks on one another is belittling the country and belittling the office to which they are striving," he said.

Powell backed President Obama in the last two elections, but says he’s still a Republican.

As for the Reagans, he told NPR, "I think they were the most gracious and charming president and first lady.”
