It’s been a rough week for Marco Rubio.
He took a drubbing in last Saturday’s Republican debate. He’s been compared to a robot. He finished fourth in the New Hampshire primary. And now, to make matters worse, he’s suffering from dental problems.
While taking a snack break while on the campaign trail, Rubio bit into a frozen Twix bar and cracked one of his molars.
“I just bit into a Twix bar and I go, ‘Man this Twix bar’s got something really hard in it,’” Rubio told reporters on a flight from Washington D.C to South Carolina. “And I go, ‘Oh my gosh, I cracked my tooth.’”
Rubio assured reporters and worried supporters that the injury wasn’t painful and that it wouldn’t keep him off the stump as the Republican battle moves to South Carolina and Nevada. By Thursday morning, the Florida senator had already visited a dentist for a temporary fix of resin filler.
The candidate added that he planned to get a more permanent replacement from his regular dentist the next time he heads home to Miami. But for now, the resin filler will have to do as the Rubio campaign has lined up a full schedule before Saturday’s GOP debate in Greenville and the Feb. 20 primary in the state.
Making light of the injury – and possibly alluding to criticism that the 44-year senator is too young and inexperienced to be president – Rubio chalked up the molar incident to his age.
“I think I’m getting old, man,” Rubio said.
In an effort to make sure he doesn’t have any more tooth troubles, Rubio took his dentist’s advice during a stop at South Carolina Cracker Barrel with his family and ordered soft foods: a plate of blueberry pancakes slathered in blueberry syrup.
If there is a silver lining to Rubio’s cracked molar, it is that it proves he is human because robots certainly don’t have dental problems.
