Two House Democrats have introduced legislation that would increase the federal excise tax on guns and rifles, and would also raise taxes on ammunition.

The bill is the latest Democratic effort to reduce access to guns, a step they say is needed to reduce gun violence around the country.

The legislation, from Reps. Danny Davis, D-Ill., and Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., appears to be a reintroduction of plan they proposed in the last Congress. That bill would have roughly doubled the federal excise tax on guns and rifles to 20 percent, and would have imposed a 50 percent excise tax on ammunition.

A description of both bills say the aim is to "amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to increase the excise tax and special occupational tax in respect of firearms."
