Time names Angela Merkel 'Person of the Year'

Time Magazine named German Chancellor Angela Merkel as its "Person of the Year" Friday, ruling out finalists Donald Trump and Caitlyn Jenner.

Calling Merkel "Europe's most powerful leader" and "chancellor of the free world," Time praised Merkel's response to the Syrian refugee crisis.

"At a moment when much of the world is once more engaged in a furious debate about the balance between safety and freedom, the Chancellor is asking a great deal of the German people, and by their example, the rest of us as well," Time's Nancy Gibbs wrote. "To be welcoming. To be unafraid. To believe that great civilizations build bridges, not walls, and that wars are won both on and off the battlefield."

Germany is on track to welcome a record number of foreign migrants this year, far outpacing the rate at which the U.S. is accepting refugees from the war-torn Middle East.
