Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's increasingly hostile rhetoric towards Muslims across the globe is putting him in danger of becoming a national security threat, according to the USA Today editorial board.

In a rare move, USA Today took a strong stance against Trump's candidacy, after the real estate developer provoked controversy by calling on the U.S. to ban all Muslims from entering the country until the federal government can "figure out what's going on."

The paper said that while "real leaders" are struggling to find ways to combat terrorism and protect religious freedoms, Trump "doesn't do subtlety" and "apparently doesn't care about turning himself into a threat to national security or trashing the values of a nation that was expressly founded to escape persecution based on religion."

Trump called for the ban on Monday night in response to the apparent growing threat of the Islamic State against the West. The proposal was almost universally condemned by news commentators, President Obama and most of the other GOP presidential candidates.
