The chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday called on President Obama to acknowledge Islamic extremism as the root cause of the San Bernardino attack that killed 14 people.

"Despite the president's statements that the Islamic State is contained and that al Qaeda is on the run, the events in San Bernardino show that the threat is real and growing," Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said in a statement Thursday.

Nunez added that despite efforts by the U.S. to fight al Qaeda and the Islamic State over the past 15 years, Wednesday's events and the recent attacks throughout the world make it evident that terrorism groups have not been contained.

The chairman charged the president with using every available resource to "take the fight to the enemy."
