The Democratic National Committee accused Marco Rubio and Congressman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., of politicizing terrorist attacks Monday after Issa endorsed Rubio for president.
"It's fitting that Congressman Darrell Issa, who led the Republican effort to exploit the Benghazi attack for political gain, is endorsing Marco Rubio, who is leading the Republican effort to exploit the Paris attacks for political gain," the DNC said in a statement. "While people around the world were still mourning the terror attacks in Paris, Marco Rubio was on television claiming the attacks were a "positive development" for his campaign, echoing Donald Trump's call to "shut down" mosques and other public spaces in response, and cutting ads discussing the prospect of an attack on the U.S."
Issa formally endorsed Rubio on Monday, adding to the long list of congressional endorsements the Florida senator has picked up during his primary campaign. Issa formerly served as the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman and played a crucial role in the investigations of incidents surrounding the attack in Benghazi in 2012. Rubio has focused much of his campaign on his foreign policy views, which is one of the reasons Issa said he endorsed Rubio.
"After 9/11, Democrats and Republicans came together to support President George W. Bush. The GOP response to the Paris attack — especially Marco Rubio's — has been shameful by contrast," the DNC said.
