Protests in Chicago continued Monday after the police officer involved in a 2014 fatal shooting made bail this afternoon.
Officer Jason Van Dyke, charged Nov. 24 with first-degree murder for killing Laquan McDonald last October, posted 10 percent of his $1.5 million bond and left Cook County Jail by early evening.
Demonstrators organized downtown and commenced a procession of empty caskets down the street, in honor of individuals who have died while in police custody. They called for the accountability of city officials who did not prosecute Van Dyke for 13 months until after the incident. They chanted "we've got to vote," referencing next year's presidential primaries.
The protests continued as a group of people knelt down to pray in the middle of LaSalle Street outside City Hall. Ten people, including NAACP President Cornell William Brooks, were arrested for disrupting traffic, but released hours later.
The University of Chicago was forced to cancel all classes Monday after a black student at a nearby school threatened to kill 16 white male students or staff in retaliation for Van Dyke's shooting McDonald that many times. The student was identified and arrested by the FBI.
