An affiliate of the Islamic State took credit for an attack carried out against a Shiite mosque in Bangladesh on Thursday.
Five gunmen stormed the Shibganj mosque with automatic weapons, wounding three and killing the mosque's septuagenarian leader. Local police say they have detained two local residents in connection to the attack.
Officials, who have denied a strong Islamic State presence in the country, blamed the militant Bangladeshi group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen for the attack. Both groups are comprised largely of radical Salafist Muslims, but are unrelated. Police killed Al Bani, the head of the military wing of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, on Wednesday.
