Scott Walker's failed presidential campaign was criticized for wasting money, and now the Wisconsin governor is soliciting donations to pay off his debt.
Walker's family and staff prospered tremendously from the campaign that lasted fewer than three months, while supporters got no return on their investment. Forty-five days after calling it quits, the governor has begun begging for money from those who bankrolled his 2016 bid.
"[A]s things changed dramatically in the presidential race, 'Walker for America' incurred a campaign debt and it is my hope that you and all of our supporters will chip in and make an online contribution of $10, $35, $50, $100, $250 or more so we can end this campaign in the black," Walker wrote in a fundraising plea. "It is a lot to ask, I know, but we feel personally obligated to make sure that every small business that extended us their good faith and credit is repaid."
One factor that may have prevented the governor from settling his debts are the exorbitant salaries he paid his staffers. The campaign paid 15 staffers at a rate exceeding a $100,000 annual salary, and it paid another 15 staffers at a rate equivalent to $50,000-$90,000 per year. The governor's fundraising pitch thanks his supporters and insists he is working on another round of "big, bold, conservative reforms" in Wisconsin.
