Harry Reid , the Democratic minority leader, said Thursday hethinks Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio should resignfrom the Senate.
Reid, who seems to enjoy injecting himself into Republicanpresidential politics, made the comments as Republican candidateJeb Bush has criticized Rubio for missing Senate votes whilecampaigning.
“Why shouldn’t he? He hatesthe Senate,†Reid told Politico when asked whether Rubio should resign.“Why should the taxpayers of this country andpeople of Florida put up with having only one senator?Doesn’t seem fair to me.â€
Rubio’s spokesman, Alex Conant, responded onTwitter: “I don’t remember Harry Reidcalling on Obama to resign in 2008. Dem leaders are afraid Marcowill beat Clinton!â€
One of the more memorable parts ofWednesday’s Republican debate in Coloradoinvolved Bush going after Rubio on the issue.
“You can campaign, or just resign and letsomeone else take the job,†Bush said.“There are a lot of people living paycheck topaycheck in Florida as well. They are looking for a senator thatwill fight for them each and every day.â€
Rubio responded to Bush: “I don’t remember you evercomplaining about John McCain’s vote record. The only reasonwhy you’re doing it now is because we’re running forthe same position, and someone has convinced you that attacking meis going to help you.”
