O'Malley: Dems need 'backbone,' not 'politics of the past'

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley told a crowd of Iowa Democrats Saturday night that their 2016 candidates need to form a "backbone" in order to be successful next November.

During his speech, O'Malley argued that 2016 Democrats need to "stand like a rock" and not become a "weather vane" that shifts as "the winds change," a not-so-veiled shot at Hillary Clinton, who has received criticism from both sides of the aisle for her shifting positions.

"Nothing we care about can be accomplished by words alone. We must take action," O'Malley said. "As Democrats, we must cast aside the worn out politics of the past. ... We have to find our backbone again to stand up for what is best for our country and what's best for all of America."

"Thomas Jefferson once said, 'in matters of fashion, swim with the current. In matters of principle, stand like a rock,'" O'Malley told the 7,000 large crowd of Iowa Democrats. "In these fast and rapidly changing times, America needs a president who will stand like a rock."
