The wife of retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has died.
Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg says Maryan Mulholland Stevens died Friday morning as a result of complications following hip surgery. Stevens was 84.
She married the Supreme Court justice in 1979, and the couple split their time in recent years between Arlington, Virginia, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Stevens graduated from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, and worked as a dietitian.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children, three step-children, eight grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and 13 step-great grandchildren.
