Ohio has both a barber and a cosmetology board, and an optometry and an optical dispensers board.
It has a dental board, chiropractic board, nursing board, psychology board, pharmacy board and respiratory care board — and a separate medical board.
These redundant panels, and hundreds of other state boards and commissions, could be on the chopping block — if the Ohio Legislature’s Sunset Review Committee ever meets.
According to state law, the committee, tasked with recommending the continuation or elimination of those boards, was supposed to meet no later than Feb. 5 and then publish a list of agencies to be reviewed within 60 days. That hasn’t happened.
The committee includes three members each from the House of Representatives and the Senate, and three members appointed by the governor.
A search of the Senate’s online information quickly turned up those appointees, but the House speaker’s website listed only appointments to standing committees. Even staff in the speaker’s office weren’t able to provide Watchdog.org the list.
The chairman, slotted as a House member in 2015, is supposed to call the first meeting, but get this: staff in the speaker’s office said the chairman would likely be decided at the committee’s first meeting.
