He had the best name on the ballot, but it was not enough to win a New Hampshire primary.
A candidate who legally changed his name to human – with a lowercase “H” – lost his bid to run for office in the small New England state Tuesday.
The former David Montenegro ran to unseat incumbent Democratic state Rep. Rose Marie Rodgers in Tuesday’s primary. He lost by a count of 181-30.
Rogers was first elected in 2012 and represented Rochester, a city of about 30,000 residents.
Montenegro legally changed his name 2012, though he made headlines this year for winning a lawsuit against the state's Division of Motor Vehicles.
He sued the DMV last year after he was denied a vanity license plate reads “cops lie”.
The DMV said he couldn’t get the plate because it was “insulting” and denigrated police officers.
According to court documents, Montenegro tried to apply for another vanity plate, with “COPSLIE” as his first choice, but provided alternative choices that included “GR8GOVT”, “GOVTSUX”, “LUVGOVT” and “GOVTLAZ.”
He was denied his first choice and was issued a plate with the text “GR8GOVT,” which he promptly surrendered back.
Montenegro sued the DMV, claiming free speech and the state’s highest court ruled this year that he could have a vanity place that reads “COPSLIE.”
