Rank-and-file House Republicans have set up what is described as a "working group" to further review the 2012 Benghazi terror attack, Fox News has learned.

The group, led by Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., has kept House GOP leadership in the loop about what it is doing. The group is not at the level of a full-blown select committee -- which many Republicans are pushing for -- but nevertheless has been meeting once a week to dig deeper into the 2012 attack in which four Americans were killed.

The group involves members from a cross-section of the committees which are conducting Benghazi investigations.

It was described to Fox News as a way to put fresh eyes on the available evidence. The lawmakers may make recommendations to the committees to conduct additional investigative work based on their research.

There remains a divide among some Republicans over how to handle Benghazi -- and whether it is time to drop the investigations or keep digging.

The group also includes Reps. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah; Trey Gowdy, R-S.C.; Devin Nunes, R-Calif.; Jim Gerlach, R-Pa; and Tom Cotton, R-Ark.
