US still has yet to arm Syrian rebels, report says

World watching how US responds?

The U.S. has not yet armed the rebel fighters battling the Assad regime in Syria despite a June resolution authorizing it to do so, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

U.S. officials tell the WSJ the delay is being blamed on the difficulty of creating a secure pipeline to ensure the small weapons and munition from the CIA do not fall into the wrong hands, especially those of jihadists fighting alongside the rebels against Assad.

The paper reports the delay can also be attributed to the fact the Obama administration is concerned about creating an even worse crisis in the country by tipping the balance in favor of the rebels.

The White House is particularly worried Islamists will fill the void if the Assad regime is crumbled, lawmakers and their aides who have attended briefings on Syria say.
