House Republicans are discussing the possibility of a short-term increase in the debt ceiling, Fox News has learned.

Lawmakers are going through various scenarios at their annual retreat in Williamsburg, Va.

One senior leadership aide said "many" at the retreat want a debate over a long-term extension of the debt ceiling to be delayed.

The aide said they think "the House and Senate should first move budgets and debate about how to responsibly address the debt crisis."

The first step could include passing some new spending cuts.

President Obama, still smarting over the 2011 debt ceiling fight, has urged Republicans not to use the debt ceiling to extract concessions like spending cuts. Republicans, though, see the debt ceiling as important leverage to pass deficit-reduction measures.
