The chief diversity officer at Gallaudet University has been placed on paid leave after she signed a petition to put a gay marriage referendum on a ballot in Maryland.
"I want to inform the community that I have placed Dr. Angel McCaskill on paid administrative leave effective immediately," Galluadet President T. Alan Hurwitz said in a statement.
"It recently came to my attention that Dr. McCaskill has participated in a legislative initiative that some feel is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer, however, other individuals feel differently," the statement read.
The referendum was placed on the ballot by opponents of same-sex marriage, MyFoxDC.com reports.
McCaskill is a Maryland resident. The state is set to vote in November on whether to approve a law legalizing gay marriage.
She did not respond to MyFoxDC.com's request for a comment.
