COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan is ridiculing Democrats for the floor fight that erupted at their national convention over restoring references to God and Jerusalem as Israel's capital to the official party platform.
"They cut references to God out of their platform," Ryan said to a chorus of boos during a rally in Colorado Springs Thursday.
"They reversed course on that one (Wednesday.) It wasn't really a popular reversal if you watched it on TV. But to quote a popular journalist from Wisconsin, ‘They were against God before they were for Him.' "
Democrats are still struggling to explain what went down with platform committee Chairman and former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland saying the vote to restore those references was a clarification and not an error, while President Obama's deputy campaign manager says the omissions were a "mistake" and that the president intervened to "fix it."
Ryan didn't let up from there. Based on excerpts from a new Bob Woodward book detailing last summer's contentious battle over raising the debt ceiling, Ryan unleashed a new line of attack.
"It was just reported that in the middle of President Obama's debt ceiling negotiations last summer Vice President Biden said quote, 'You know, if I were doing this I'd do it totally different.' Sounds like Joe and I finally agree on something," Ryan quipped.
One fight in that battle hits a particular nerve with Ryan.
In an April 2011 speech at George Washington University, President Obama ripped into the budget proposal Ryan crafted dubbed 'The Path to Prosperity.'
"There's nothing serious or courageous about this plan," Obama said with Ryan seated just 25 feet away.
"And I don't think there's anything courageous about asking for sacrifice from those who can least afford it and don't have any clout on Capitol Hill. That's not a vision of the America I know," Obama added.
Immediately after the speech Ryan reportedly told White House Economic Council National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling, "I can't believe you poisoned the well like that," then walked away.
