Chants of 'We built it' break out at GOP convention

Rarely does a single gaffe drive an entire night of a national party's political convention.

But President Obama, with his "you didn't build that" blunder last month in Virginia, gave Republicans the rhetorical mortar to "build" the opening night in Tampa.

Speech after speech, in the run-up to keynoter Chris Christie, hammered the president for his suggestion that America's entrepreneurs didn't build their business.

Chants of "We built it, we built it," broke out on the convention floor Tuesday night as Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., echoed the theme of the day. Delegates waved a mix of hand-scrawled and pre-made signs with those words emblazoned on them.

"Unlike President Obama, I know that small businesses are the true engine of our economy," McMorris Rodgers said.

"We built it" was the official title for Tuesday's line-up. Obama has insisted his words were taken out of context, but the gaffe has lived on.
