After the big announcement of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate, the vice presidential also-rans didn't hesitate in offering their congrats.
"Mitt Romney has made a great choice in Paul Ryan," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a reported close second, said in a statement Saturday morning. "Paul is one of my best friends in Congress and someone I have worked closely with as a former colleague on the House Ways & Means Committee."
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, another Romney VP prospect, said Ryan's addition would help Republicans win the swing state of Wisconsin.
"Ryan is a respected leader and a bold thinker regarding the changes needed to restore America," Pawlenty stated Saturday. "I am excited about a Romney-Ryan ticket and look forward to doing all I can to help them win this election."
"Mitt Romney has made a great choice," Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who would have been the first Hispanic on a presidential ticket if picked, said on Twitter. Portman and Rubio were both notified Friday by Romney that they would not be selected as his No. 2.
New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte was one of the first of the short-listers to react to the news.
"Fantastic VP choice with Paul Ryan," she said, also on Twitter. "Romney-Ryan ticket will get our fiscal house in order and get Americans working again!"
