Obama, Democrats raise $60 million in May

President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party have raised a combined $60 million in May for his re-election effort.

The totals helped the president exceed his fundraising haul in April, when his campaign and his party raised $43.6 million. That was slightly more than his presumed challenger in the November election, Mitt Romney, and the Republican Party, which raised about $40 million in April.

Romney has not yet released fundraising totals for May.

Through May, Obama and Democratic groups backing his campaign have raised about $510 million. Romney and Republicans supporting him have brought in more than $400 million through April. Republican super PACs have raised more than their Democratic counterparts, helping Romney keep pace with Obama.

Obama's campaign said on Twitter it has more than 2.2 million donors.
