Rick Santorum may have just beaten Newt Gingrich again.
Though the former House speaker was narrowly holding on to a fourth-place finish in New Hampshire late Tuesday night after the close of polls in the primary, updated results from the New Hampshire secretary of state’s office show Santorum moving ahead – by just 117 votes.
That pushes Gingrich down into fifth place, though the final results will not be certified for a few weeks.
This is significant because the two are essentially tied for second place in the latest polling out of South Carolina, according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls. If Mitt Romney were to win South Carolina on the heels of his victories in both Iowa and New Hampshire, many political watchers speculate he could all but wrap up the nomination.
Gingrich came in fourth in Iowa, while Santorum placed second.
The latest count according to the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office:
CANDIDATE VOTES
Romney 97,600
Paul 56,872
Huntsman 41,783
Santorum 23,408
Gingrich 23,291
Perry 1,764
