Less than a year before the election, more American voters disapprove than approve of the job President Obama is doing as president -- and almost all view the economy negatively.
Forty-four percent of voters approve and 51 percent disapprove of President Obama’s job performance, according to a Fox News poll released Friday.
Last month, 42 percent approved and 48 percent disapproved. The increase in disapproval is due at least in part to Democrats. The 19 percent of Obama’s party who now disapprove of the job he’s doing matches the previous high (August 2010). The president’s average approval among Democrats for his term so far is 82 percent, and average disapproval is 11 percent.

An overwhelming majority of voters -- 94 percent -- say the economy is in bad shape. Twenty-eight percent rate conditions as “only fair” and 66 percent say “poor.” That is the highest “poor” rating ever measured by the Fox News poll.
In September 2008 -- in the middle of the Wall Street collapse -- 65 percent said the economy was in poor shape.
Less than 1 percent of voters says the economy is in “excellent” shape and 5 percent say it is in “good” condition.
Voters split evenly over whether the president’s policies are the right answer: 48 percent think Obama’s agenda will help the economy in the long run and should be supported and 47 percent think his agenda will damage the country and should be stopped.
Meanwhile, 53 percent of voters think the economy will be better a year from now. That’s down from 66 percent who felt that way in April 2009, the last time the question was asked.
Just over a third -- 36 percent -- think the economy will be in worse shape a year from now, up 10 percentage points since 2009.
Though gloom rules across the board, Republicans (77 percent) and independents (63 percent) are more likely than Democrats (56 percent) to say the economy is in “poor” shape.
As for their expectations for the future, 65 percent of Democrats think the economy will be better a year from now, while 48 percent of independents and 41 percent of Republicans feel that way.
The poll also asked voters to rate the president’s job performance on several issues.
While 35 percent approve and 62 percent disapprove of the job Obama’s doing on the economy, his ratings on other issues are somewhat more positive.
Some 42 percent of voters approve and 55 percent disapprove of Obama on health care. On Afghanistan, 47 percent approve and 45 percent disapprove. The president’s best issue is Iraq: 50 percent approve and 42 percent disapprove.
The Fox News poll is based on landline and cell phone interviews with 911 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide and was conducted under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R) from December 5 to December 7. For the total sample, it has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
