First Lady Michelle Obama attended a dance performance on her first day in Brazil where she spoke to young Brazilians about the importance of international relations. Many of the attendees at the event participated in the State Department's Youth Ambassador Program which took them to the White House last January. To those who had visited Washington, Mrs. Obama said, "I promised I'd come to your neighborhood and I'm here!"

Others are studying English or participating in US-sponsored exchange programs. The First Lady stressed the importance of learning about other cultures as a key to a successful future. A local Capoeira group performed the traditional Brazilian mixed-martial arts dance followed by an all female drumming group. See video highlights below:
