Delaware District Votes Against Naming School After Biden

President Obama's got streets, academies and even Antigua's highest mountain named after him. His vice president? Not so much.

A local school district in Joe Biden's own state snubbed America's No. 2 by opting not to name a new elementary school after him. Though his name was in the running as a finalist, voters in the Brandywine school district in Delaware ultimately chose to name it after one of their community's early farming families.

According to The Wilmington News Journal, the school board announced Monday night that voters chose Hanby Elementary School as the official name. Hanby was also the name of the middle school that used to stand on the same site.

Though Biden, a Pennsylvania native, graduated from the University of Delaware and has represented the state in the Senate since the early 1970s, some were adamantly opposed to the school being named after him. Somebody set up an anonymous website urging locals not to vote for his name. One voter told the News Journal she didn't want to put Biden's name on the school because he sent his kids to private school.

The Obamas also send their children to private school in Washington, D.C. But that didn't stop a school district in Prince George's County, Md., among others, from naming an elementary school after the 44th president.

Biden does not currently have any Delaware schools named after him, though there is an environmental center in Delaware's Cape Henlopen State Park bearing his name.
